Hi all,

Upon being an hour late for work this morning I had time to reflect, and look at our mail ay ahead of schedule.. I opened a Thames Water bill to see them asking for £463 for the year.

Now that to me seems utterly stupid, its a 3 bed flat, with one bathroom/shower, dishwasher and washing machine. Does this sound totally stupid to you lot?

My housemate is saying its about right, I think the complete opposite..

Advise..

Mine's around £600 for the year (Welsh Water, 3 bed terrace). Doesn't seem that strange to me.

"Near universal" water metering should be introduced in England and Wales to help protect supplies, the Environment Agency has recommended...

The Environment Agency could try asking the water companies to fix all the leaking pipes first!

Our 3 bedroom terrace is about £100 a year for water (Essex & Suffolk Water) and £250 for sewage/drainage (Anglian Water).

If Thames supply the water and take it away it sounds about right.

Our house is rather large and quite old (Mid 1800's, 5 double bdrooms, 3 bathrooms, pond).
Something to do with this and when the water rate was assessed means that we pay a whopping £135 a year biggrin

Guess who doesn't want a water meter?

Just off out to wash the cars! Pip pip!

Bloody hell.

Still going to ring them because the dates are not right. But that does surprise me..

They want the whole lot now too, cheeky bds, what about a nice direct debit?

240 for fresh/waste in a 4 bed. 2 powershowers/1bath/dishwasher. 4 people living here, lots of washing for the kids. Switching to water meter saved a fortune for me.

How does one go about a meter?

Plus the place is hired so is it worth doing for 18 months or so?

you'd better speak to your LL first - they might not want one (once it's installed it is extremely dificult to get it removed)

Yes, good point, I will drop them an email (live in Malaysia).

I have found the section on the Thames Water site, so all good. Do they do it to flats? Ours is in a block, and the block is quite old (1920)?

My water bill is just under £900 for this year: your bill is cheap!

The thing that really irks about it though, is the excuse used for the huge bills down here (Cornwall) is that South-West Water have to keep the beaches clean! So in effect, we're paying for the rest of you to have a nice clean beach for your summer holiday.

Argh!

Not only do they charge you for it, they take it all back, and charge you for that too!

I think the OP is bloody cheap, but I'd still like to know why ours has gone up more than 10% over last year, and is more than double that which we used to pay at our last place 5 miles up the road!

I think mine is usually about £27 a quarter.

This is for a 2 bed semi.

I don't want a sodding water meter.

It's cheap if you think about what you're getting.

This might sound strange, but I think having fresh water piped into your house is awesome smile

That's the simple and cheap bit - it's the sewage that is the expensive and complex part, nearly three times the cost.

Yes, it appears the waste removal is the costly bit. I liked it better when I lived at home and we had a sespit.
