Do I need a middle box?

So, the middle box on my little Citroen AX GT has split where the front section joins the middle box, a common occurence. I tried the usual Gun Gum and special fan/jubilee clip thing that comes with it but that packed up after a week! I need to do this on a buget so, do I need a middle box at all? Would it be too noisy if I just put a piece of pipe in its place like a de-cat pipe?
