The work van is a Citroen Relay 2.8HDI, which has cut out several times when cold, and then is a pain to get going again. The first time this happened the engine management light flashed on, then accelerating hard up the slip road going onto the A1 everything just conked out, no power steering etc.

The thing is, when it is warm it seems to be fine. So the obvious thing would be to let it warm up first before driving it, which I would do if the thing didn't take an age to warm up.

I know next to nothing about engines, let alone diesel ones, so is this common, or easy to cure?

I'm not big on diesel engines so take this for what it is worth. How about the engine temperature transducer? The quick way is probably to take it to a dealer or other specialist who can interrogate the ECU.

Cheers for the reply, got a mechanic round and he plugged his diagnostic stuff in, it's come up with a couple of faults but apparently they might not be the direct cause of the problem. Citroen are getting back to him tomorrow hopefully, either it's going to be very cheap or rather expensive rolleyes
