Had a bit of pinking tonight under acceleration. Been doing a bit of town driving and when I gave it a bit of right pedal it pinked a bit and cleared. after a few applications of the loud pedal it went away. Running Shell standard unleaded. No warning lights or histrionics from the i-drive.
Anything to worry about or was it the ECU having a moment?

Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery for 10-15 mins. That will reset your ECU to factory default setting. Re-connect & rag the car for 10 mins. Then the ECU will have set itself for your driving style....Anything to worry about or was it the ECU having a moment?
Resetting the ECU has nothing to do with engine timing, which is what causes pinking. The cause is the car's inability to retard or advance the spark timing enough to deal with the low grade fuel.
I have always known that big BMW engine require a higher grade RON. It probably even says it on the instrument display.
