Help is a e46 m3 block the same as a 330i

Hi just wanted to know if a e46 m3 engine was similar to that of the 330i or is it totaly different i realise it is in a different state of tune but is it a hotted up 330i engine?

I doubt it has many similarities, it has over 100 BHP more, and is a 3.2.

Totally different, the S54 has an iron block, M54 aluminium.
