IMHO was to ever build the AJP and S6 engines. I think they should just have built a classic V8 with the classic V8 sound and then used it in all their cars. When I bought my first Chimaera one of the major selling points to me was the sound, this alone would probably have been enough. Everytime I give passenger rides now I find myself appologising that my Cerb does not have that fantastic roar at low speeds, and whatever anyone says about sports exhausts etc the AJP doesnt either. Any considerations like better efficiency/power of the flat plane crank should have been secondary. 1 engine 1 classic V8 cheaper and better.

where has this come from...?!?

Although not the same as the RV8 engines, the AJPV8 has a sound of it's own, as does the S6... and IMHO both sound pretty good - they're just different to the RV8.

Horses for courses...

I think the S6s sound pretty good. Still a V8 fan though.

Indeed, but you have to really get it going before it compares to the RV8, a always liked rumbling around town and blipping the throttle just to please myself.

The AJP engine has one of the highest BHP/litre ratios in production. So performance wise it isn't too bad...

It amuses me the way that a lot of people talk about the sound of an engine when they actually mean the sound of the exhaust (not saying you ocean1, just people in general). I really miss the sound of the NSX V6 at full throttle but the exhaust system was weedy. The Cerbera on the other hand doesn't have a great sounding engine, but the exhaust more than makes up for it.

You cant make a 4 Cylinder say, sound like a V8, it sounds the way it does because of the sequence of the pistons firing, so I dont agree that the sound is produced only by the exhaust, although this clearly makes a difference.

I seem to have messed up the quoting thing again doh!

I would try and quote you, but I have no idea which one to quote

I totally agree that the engine characteristics will make a difference to the type of sound produced, however when a lot of people say "listen to that engine" what they actually mean is "listen to that exhaust note"

You could argue that the exhaust is part of the engine

I only sort of agree - the two tvr engines are Awesome - but big old push rodder will always make a deeper (to some nice noise - low down mainly) the 6 seems a bit better than AJP in noise stacks (no flat plane crank) - but high up rev noise pretty good - just mid range, base noise not there...

Go buy a V8 car then! As already mentioned it's the exhaust that tunes the noise, and my V8 Audi sounds err, well it doesn't sound at all!

I had an extreme exhaust on my last Tamora (basically no silencers except the cats) and it was ridiculously loud and made the hairs on your neck stand up - it was mad even at 1500 revs!

My current sports exhaust makes the S6 have a similar depth of bass noise to the Rover V8, which is fine. You cannot get the off-beat noise of a V8 from a straight6, but loud and deep is good enough in most cases.

Yours sounds like a tug boat at low revs

I thought that the reason they did away with the Rover V8 was because BMW bought them and Wheeler didn't want to be putting German engines in his cars.

I think I got that from an interview in onw of the car mags, but may be wrong.

I think having the balls to go out there and design three new engines in the last decade was fantastic. How many other manufactures have managed that with so few units produced.

I do love the sound of my pre-cat V8S though, but would forsake it for 350bhp.

Rubbish. Do your homework; the speed twelve is far more of a different engine than that, it even has a fabricated block!
