I need to replace the master and slave cylinders. TVRCarParts advertise them for £50 each but I've seen what look like identical ones on eBay for half that price but associated with a land rover.

I looked at the parts list link on here but can't find any extra info' on what other cars may have the same cylinders. Does anyone know if there is another donor model that can be used?

Cheers,

SteveO

I am not 100% sure but I think someone said it may be modified with a bigger pipe for the TVR but I don't know for sure.

The previous owner of my S documented in its history, that he fitted a Clutch Slave Cylinder part no 591231 from a landrover 90/110.

Yep - that was me. Cost me around a tenner from eBay.
BUT - the pipe union was a different size. I had to take the pipe off, cut off the lower flare, spend another 50p on the correct size of union and reflare the end. All this was relatively straightforward as I have access to a decent flaring tool. Bleeding it was a doddle - just filled up the master, opened the bleed screw and gravity did the rest!

(How's it going Andy? Still making you biggrin I hope!)

Graham

Found another at "Davidson MacMillan Land Rover Spares" at £7.11 for slave and £12.50 for master - I think I may give them a ring!

My local garage will do the flaring for me - they see me as a cash cow now I have the Tiv!!!! I may even go for a braided hose if I can find one to fit.

Thanks for the info' chaps.

Steve

Hi Graham. Body will be back on the week coming up to Easter. Had loads of problems with the dreaded rust. What appears OK at a glance proves not to be. This culminated in discovering the Off side trailing arm was completely shot and irreplaceable as it appears to be a unique S2 Adjustable arm and therefore the shock mounts are different to the S3 replacements. Fortunately Adrian Venn has done a fantastic job of rebuilding it. Just a brake pipe and waxoyl before the body goes on. Will post story and pictures then Regards Andy wink

Hi Graham,

I've just ordered the slave off eBay.

Can you remember the size of union you needed? I'd like to get things together asap so I can do the job this weekend.

Cheers,

Steve

Andy I've got some copper brake pipe and a good quality flaring tool if you need it.

Hi Steve,

I'm afraid I can't remember exactly. The original was a finer thread pitch, both were a similar diameter, and I think the new one was metric (M10 x something).

If you've got an old-fashioned car accessory shop nearby, they'll have a multi-compartment plastic box filled with all sizes of union. Rush along clutching (hoho) your new cylinder and find the one that fits snugly. That's what I did. Or you may find that YOUR old one is the same anyway (it's a TVR thing). If you undo the pipe from the master cylinder in advance, you'll be able to check easily without grovelling under the car.

Good luck!
Graham

Cheers Graham,

I dropped in to my local garage yesterday and they said no problem for me to drop in with the new cylinder and old pipe and they would sort any flaring/unions out for me on Saturday morning - one of the benefits of having been to school with the owners!

They also said they would knock up a new pipe for me as the old one seems too short and has no coils or movement in it! He makes them for his MG's out of central heating microbore pipe.

Hopefuly out on Saturday afternoon.....

Ok, I've got the new cylider, taken the pipe off at the master and have the following:

the union on the slave has a finer, metric, thread than the new slave.
the master union fits the new slave.

I'll try to get onto a Land Rover site and see if anyone can give me the union size for the slave.

I would like to ditch the old solid pipe too so looking for a braided replacement.

Might try www.stevsonmotors.co.uk
I got a set of Goodridge brake flexi's from them, they claim to be able to supply a vast array of brake, clutch and fuel lines.

Thanks for the link Mike.

The boys in my local garage dug out a 7/16" unf union they had in their box of 'this will come in handy one day' bits. They also re-flared the pipe for me FOC!!

I could have waited for the braided pipe to come but the sun was out........

So I put the new slave is on and it's working fine, still a little grind when engaging reverse but I'll look at that later. 1 to 5 are much smoother.

I've got two unions ordered from Land Rover and a local company will make up a braided pipe for me next week, when I fit that I'll see about making an adjustment for reverse.

I'll also make a note to myself to wear goggles when bleeding, one drop of DOT5.1 in the eye really does sting...........

New slave works a treat, a few crunches initially when trying to quickly engage reverse but they have all but disappeared - is the clutch self-adjusting in some way?

Just some info - maybe it can be added to the parts list?

TVR Carparts cost £52+vat+postage, eBay shop Island 4x4 was £10 including postage.

Slave cylinder is eBay item number 350171331887 but it requires 7/16"UNF union.

Just for reference an early 200Tdi Land Rover Discovery clutch slave will swap with the Land Rover Series 3 slave above but is M12 x 1mm thread. I go this information from the Land Rover owners club.

I hope this is useful.

You don't need to use 1/4" pipe if making a pipe from scratch. I'm running the regular 3/16" pipe and it works fine.

Can't argue if all working well but should be 1/4 because lot more fluid being moved than with brakes, having said that, going back to early bit about garage usind micro bore central heating pipe, smallest I know of is 8mm or 5/16 ?
