I have my Luego in the classifieds and have received several emails from a potential purchaser in Mauritius.

Has anyone ever sold their kit car to a foreign buyer? What does it involve regarding the registration documents etc.?

The buyer seems prepared to buy the car without viewing it, and by sending a haulier to collect it and ship it out of Felixstowe. He apparently needs the "different papers" (i assume the v5 and mot) for the car to check customs will let him import it. He has stated that payment would be via a bank transfer. The car is particularly attractive to him because it is less than 1600cc and will attract less tax?

Obviously i am aware of the various scams, but i am also aware that many cars are going abroad on genuine sales at the moment.

Any advice or suggestions to enable me to try to work out if this is genuine, would be appreciated.

TIA
Gary

Well the obvious things.
The car goes nowhere until the money has cleared into your account.

The V5 stays with you until the money is transferred. I see no reason why they could not have a black and white copy of it. If it were me I would scan it then put a 'COPY' type water mark across it. I would also ask for a deposit before I sent it.

The V5 has a section for informing DVLA of permanent export. I would ask DVLA if the whole document comes back to them in the case of an export or does it go with the car.

Don't forget the Nigerian scams often involve bank transfers appearing to clear your account and then getting reversed much later on.

If it was me I'd only take cash which I'm sure wouldn't be too hard for a genuine buyer to arrange.

Not just money cleared in the Bank, but MAKE SURE that money cannot be reclaimed at a later date ie: stolen cheque. You want to 100% sure that money is yours and cannot be claimed back by anyone, even weeks later when someone realises it was dodgy money.

in case you sell the car to a foreigner the V5 will go with the car!!!!

the only part remaining at yours is the export section, which you need to sent to the dvla.

also dont forget to prepare a sales contract.

do not release the car without payment. to sent a copy of the V5 in advance is never a risk.

I've sold two of my cars (Raffo Tipo 12 and my first Elan) to foreign buyers, both without problems, both paid in cash.

Don't let it put you off, so long as you are careful about payment and are confident that the buyer is genuine.

Sold a couple to EU buyers before. A cobra rep to Germany for a bag full of £50 notes (I kid you not) and a Marcos to Holland with direct bank transfer of funds BEFORE the guy even arrived in the UK.

Just exercise caution and you should be fine.
