I take it your are talking about the 2.0Lt and 2.2Lt XJ
Don't think they make a 2L XJ, I expect the cigar lighter in an XJ has more power than that.If it's XJs we are talking about then it's 2.7L for the older ones, I guess now being replaced with the newer 3L versions unless they are waiting for the new XJ.
Tis a bit confusing as the thread title says "XL"

Hi Folk's,
Sorry for the typo, I did mean the XJ and yes I was looking at the 2.7L. I remeber seeing a top gear program where they got a fantastic range from the 2.7. However does that translate in real life. My daily run is around 36 miles each way and mostley A roads and motorway.
That all, by the supercharged V8!Sorry for the typo, I did mean the XJ and yes I was looking at the 2.7L. I remeber seeing a top gear program where they got a fantastic range from the 2.7. Wasn't there a discussion here last year about the mileage from the Diesel XJ.
I would expect it to return 30+ on those roads (They quote 35 for combined cycle) and from my drive in one, I would say that it's significantly quicker than the E220/240 Mrs Hex has had at times when her 320CDI was off the road again.

The engine is massively better at hauling around a large car than the 2.4/2.6 V6 in your Merc, which has always been seen by Merc dealerships as a rather pointless engine - the E200 kompressor delivered more real world grunt and better economy for a lower price.
When I worked at Jag my average running an XJ from central london to J7 of the M4 each day would be 31mpg. If I took the car on a trip it averaged 38-42 when driven enthusiastically. My best was 47mpg and worst about 25mpg.
Great car, if a little dated inside. Tend to be reliable as long as they are used. Constant city driving leads to DPF problems.
20" alloys look great but are very sensitive to wheel alignment and balancing.
Having spent a considerable amount of time in the last three generations of E class I'd say that there is no comparison as far as driver enjoyment goes. XJ all the way!
