New to Jags, advice needed

when you say old school what do you mean?
50s?, 60s?, 70s?, 80s?, 90s?
If you want reliable, look for an XJ6 X300 model, Nov. 94 -> 96ish. if that's old school enough.
The models before where the known as XJ40s, but also badged XJ6.
Before that were the original XJ6s, Series I, II or III
that takes you back to the late 60s.
Give us a bit more of a clue.

The key to buying an older Jaguar is to make absolutely sure you buy the best example you can afford, rather than concentrating solely on one model. You'll need to do some research to make sure whatever you buy fits your needs and driving style and look at several before you part with any beer tokens to avoid tears later on.
I'd suggest you look at the '90s saloon range which covers the XJ40 and X300. Basicaly they are the same car but with a slightly differnt body and are fairly releliable and easy to work on.
Your main concern should be rust - almost everywhere on the 40 and rear wheel arches, sill, and under the bonnet on the X300.
I know of a really clean 1990 XJ40 that's only done 55k from new. It been sitting unused in a garage for at least the last year and needs a good wash and polish and a thorough service and is up for sale by an elderly gentleman who is giving up driving. PM me if you're interested.

As others have said, buy on condition, not age or mileage. Even the later X308s can rust badly if you're unlucky.
On earlier cars avoid the small engine (2.9?) unless it's very cheap.
I also know of a nice one owner XJ40 with low miles and full main dealer service history that will probably be coming up for sale soon (as long as my friend who has just bought it doesn't decide to add it to his ever expanding jag pile (2xXJ 40s, xjs, x300)...pm me if you'd like more info.
There's nothing wrong with driving a big jag in your 20s. If I had the space a 4.0 XJ40 or XJR would be sitting outside my house and I'm 28!

Oh Steve, you really shouldn't have said that. Just don't tell me it's a 4.0L Sovereign or Daimler...groomi said:

Under the layer of dust on the body there appears to be no rust at all, the subframe looks OK and I couldn't see any scratches, peeling lacquer or damage either - very surprising for earlyish XJ40. Some of the chrome was a little pitted and the MOT will have run out by now.
With a really thorough clean and polish and a full fluid change it'd make a nice car. I was kind of tempted myself, especially as the vendor was not asking a lot of money for it.

I expect that he'll be looking for £1500-2000, but I haven't seen the car yet. It's Burgundy with light leather. He's got a project xjs for sale in the classified for £750 at the moment (lack of time/space to sort it...) if you want to give him a call.On earlier cars avoid the small engine (2.9?) unless it's very cheap.

My first Jag was an 11 year old 4.0L XJ40 Sovereign in similar condition - 33,000 miles, full dealer history etc. A real find - I'd be really struggling to turn another such car down... and if it was a V12...

Know how you feel. I mentioned to Chris at RGCs a few months ago I fancied a V12 X300. He said, really a customer of mine is thinking of selling his immaculate very low mileage one.
EEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Quick run away before SWMBO comes after me with a pair of half bricks!
It was a close run thing though. Damn good thing I said no though, considering the bill that the XK has just run up. Just thank goodness that they don't seem to have made a Black X300 V12 with Cream interior. I'm not so taken with the Nimbus Grey or Oatmeal leather fitted to all the ones I've seen. Black paint and Cream insides do appear to be on the list of possible colour schemes.

I saw an olive green X300 V12 once. It just worked perfectly...groomi said:

Looked at a Virage cosmetic 6.3 in in Mason Black and Cream one, that looked the dogs .... too. If it had been a 6.3 rather than just a cosmetic I might have been tempted.
