Discussion
Well If I've been caught, I hold my hands up, but so have Sky sports and the Dreary Mail...
And it seems all other media was in on the April Fool

I still think it's real, maybe I'm a fool

I took it as real - they were discussing it on radio 4 this morning, and its fairly big on the bbc site:

No its real !
I think its a great move by Ashley and Newcastle. With 9ish games to go, Newcastle need a guy not only passionate about football, but about Newcastle, who will do his all to keep the club in the prem because he loves the club, who can motivate the players, get the respect of the players and knows what he is doing.
If it will keep them up i don't know, but i think its a very good move although it could be interpreted as a bit of a pr stunt by Ashley if Newcastle go down.

Didn't Suart Pearce do a similar job at Forest once?
"He was appointed caretaker player-manager of Forest in December 1996 but, despite winning manager of the month in January 1997, the club were relegated from the Premier League. He opted to leave the club at the end of the 1996–97 season after twelve years at the City Ground."
Hmm, well it might work this time.

Basically...he is in a win win situation and he knows it
If he can keep them up he will take all the glory, if they go down he will blame it on kinnear n co
Yup he would have been more foolish to decline the offer. If he can keep them up he will take all the glory, if they go down he will blame it on kinnear n co
He literally can't lose.
He doesn't come across as all that astute on TV and when you add to this the fact that he hasn't managed in the big time before then you begin to wonder why ANYONE (even Geordies) think he'll do a good job for a club in SERIOUSLY deep do-do.
I'm baffled...wrong man at the wrong time. Somebody like Venables would have been a smarter move in the short-term.
He will of course get the 'Shearer bounce' effect - possibly for a game or 2 - but it wont last, he'll be found wanting very quickly by his betters who've all been there and know what is required.
All IMHO.

Didn't Shearer say not too long ago he wouldn't work for Newcastle whilst the present incumbents were in charge?

Why does everyone always think of Euro 96 when Terry Venables' name comes up and not the last 4 jobs he has had with Australia, Crystal Palace, Boro and Leeds where he has produced appalling managerial displays.

So your clubs waist high in effluent, who ya gonna call?Venables Track Record
QPR: FA Cup final in 1982, and to the Second Division title the following season.
Barcelona: Spanish League title in 1985 and the League Cup the following season, when Barça lost in the European Cup final - beaten by Steaua Bucharest on penalties.
Tottenham Hotspur: FA Cup Winners
England: went all the way to the semi-finals of the Euro '96 tournament. Having beaten Holland 4-1 in the opening phase. - commonly regarded as one of the greatest England performances of modern times - and auld enemies Scotland, they went on to beat Spain on penalties before losing the same way to Germany, who went on to win the final.
Australia: Dsperately unlucky not to qualify for their first World Cup in 1998 under 'El Tel'.
Middlesbrough:His remit was to save the club from another quick return to Division One, and once more he was successful
