I have a tom tom go700, top of the range about 4 years ago, very trusty and well sued round europe, but last night, it refused to get a signal and I travelled down to Brighton without it working. Thsi morning, still no joy, so headed to my cleint in Worthing without it, (first visit and no directions)but saw a halfrauds on the way, so popped in to buy a new model. I was just lost at all the Tom toms they have now, tom tom live, non live, 940's 740' 540's, the 540 and 740 were same price!

But what is it all about live things, they said it will update maps and pois automatically? Can i still download pois (speedcameras) from the pocketgps website though, as I have done for years and still never been nabbed by plod (touch wood) or are you limited to "official" tom tom camera downloads? (I have never used the internet options on my go700 as the phone would not support it, so have only used satnav, pois and bluetooth phone kit occasionally). But traffic and wether updates may be useful, so are these available FOC?

In the end, as a temp measure i deceided to buy a tiny tom tom go (not xl) with UK and Europe, for £127, and then do some research, upgrade to a newer all singing /dancing model once i get my head round the technology, and let the missus have the tiny tom tom go. All seemed reasonable, but my plan was foiled as I returned to the car and "April Fool" the old go 700 is working!!

So now I have a brand new unopened tiny go thingy, and need to either keep it and it become my sat nav, (or let missus have it and keep my go700), or trade it in on a singing and dancing model and let the missus use the go700.

So long story short, is the tom tom live worth it, how much is subscription? Do you need a compatible mobile phone with the 740/ 740 live? I dont need USA mapping as I rent sat nav when over there anyway, but Europe is where i do most of my miles for work. Do the "live" functions work in europe as well as UK?

Any help appreciated as I feel like my dad trying to use the "video"!

Cannot tell you what to get, but can give you some info. The Live feature of TT 540/740/940 means that those units have an internal sim card and obtain data direct without needing an external phone connection. The cost of this is £8 per month after a free trial period. If you are not going to pay this sub, you are throwing away the Live feature and will be better off with a version which does not have it, such as a Go 530/730/930, or lower down the range (without Bluetooth Handsfree and other niceties) an XL.

Live Traffic is supposed to give better quality info than other traffic services. With the Go range you can get paying traffic via a mobile phone (intermediate quality) or free for life traffic via a radio receiver with an untidy aerial on the screen (lowest quality, and IMO doubtful whether it is good enough to be worth bothering with).

If you want to go on using the Pocket GPS World database you can do that with any TT.

I am very pleased with a 920T - (became the same as a 930T after a software upgrade). I pay for TT speed camera info, and don't bother with Traffic.

Hope this helps.
