Well I've had my 400SE from newish, and the petrol gauge has always been crap.
As long as it not driven too hard, and you take you time to fill up, (if you rock the car when it full you can still get another 10 litres in) you should be able to get 200 miles between fill up.
AFAIK it one area that never been fixed.
Not even got one at all on the racer.

Do you have twin tanks by any chance? I do on my 450SE. Depending which corner I go round the petrol gauge will show different amount in the tank.
I concur with the advice of taking it slowly to fill up and rocking the car from side-to-side. Also, rather than a spare can, I tend to refill when the gauge shows a maximum of a quarter full on left-hand bends!

When I fill mine to the brim then often (but not always) it shows full
In anything from 10-20 miles it then shows half full and
by 50 miles max it has dropped and records zero until the next brimming
I knew my Wedge was a bit thirsty but tank empty in 50 miles
I just never bother believing anything it shows and rely on mileage
and the afore mentioned spare gallon in the boot at all times.
My previous 350 was pretty much the same

The electric dipstick.
Fill it up, shows full, drive home shows 3/4.
Use car, no change, use car again no change, then it is suddenly less than a 1/4 and starts bouncing below from 0 - 1/4 while I quickly detour to a fill up place.
When I fill it it never takes more than six gallons!
I think I could get a more accurate measure of the fuel in the tank by weighing the car.

How funny ......... was speaking to a colleague at work just yesterday and told him that my car rarely takes more than 30 litres of fuel from empty on the gauge, though I am sure it has a 60 litre tank
He said about the sender being faulty and said I should keep a can of fuel in the back and just run it out noting the mileage.
Glad it is a common thing, reading this thread. When I hit motorways, it is like playing Russian roulette with my car between service stations ... will it last, wont it last.
Oh the joys.

Working on a tank full, you'll get approx 200 miles that's what i work on at the moment. jonny.
I usually only get 170 miles on my 400 - so beware!!!!and yes carry a spare can (full at all times)

Umm....mine seems to be fairly good.
From full it drops down steadily with miles done. It only 'lies' a little with 1/4 of a tank...and this seems to be when going up or down hill.
Certainly seems better than my previous TVR's..BUT i still don't trust it!
I tend to try & keep it above half a tank.. incase any sludge gets dragged up from the tank!

Basically they all don't work in one way or another
or
Does anyone have one that actually works accurately
and what have they done to it to make it work
Richard
Mine is accurate as when I had the fuel tank out, I calibrated it. Remove the sender and bend arm so that when it is empty, the float just touches the bottom. A lot of trial and error though and getting the tank out is a pain. or
