De Cat or not to De Cat???
Discussion
Hi All,
Just after people opinions and real world experiences about De-Catting their cars!!
Is it worth doing? would you recommend it?
I have a Maser Gransport and i'm seriously contemplating it! I just would like to hear peoples views!! I would to unleash some more of THAT v8 noise!
Are they stupidly loud? (i'm thinking of keeping the standard tubi manufactured maser back boxes which have a switchable valve)
Obviously would fail an MOT but not too difficult to swap pipes as required etc
Good move? bad move??

Definitely DECAT...best way to get more grunt out of the exhaust.
I've had mine done and much prefer it...makes your presence felt even at idle!
Neighbours won't be too chuffed esp if you have an underground garage like me though.

I took the cats out of my 355 as the old ones were buggered. The idle was a lot louder, but WOT was much the same. This is perculiar to the 355, as there is a Y-pipe before the cats, which leads to a bypass valve.
Anyway, I just found it annoyingly loud at idle (as did the policeman), so I put some sports cats back in, but sadly its made no difference to the noise. If it were me, I'd try the sports cats first, as you may get the result you want but still remain legal...
If not, shove in some decats afterwards.

I have a sports exhaust and test pipes on my 348 and it sounds awesome but all the noise is behind me.
Normal cruising with the windows up is very quiet but full chat with the windows down is amaizing - it sounds like an F1 car !!!
The only thing with de cating the Maser is that the pipes run under the car and can cause alot of booming and vibration in the cabin.
My old man put some sports back boxes on his 4200 and the car sounded awesome but was too boomey inside the car at normal speed.
I'm told after so many miles the exhausts soot up and they loose the resonance ?
Give it a go - you could always sell them if they are too loud.

I ran my 348 without cats for over a year. It sounded and felt much better without the crappy oem ones.
I then started to worry about the insurance implications in the event the car was a write off. No cats, therefore would fail an MOT ... therefore not road legal... therefore not covered by insurance and we all know how insurance companies try not to pay out.
Not sure if I was just being over cautious, but I ended up getting some Hyperflow cats. The car feels very similar to a decatt, without any of the legal/insurance etc issues.
No more flames out of the exhausts though.....

Now you know this is not true Sy. My insurance knows about my straight pipes and they weren't bothered. Also you know that my car has a fresh legal MOT every year. So stop this foolishness trying to justyfy why you over spent on buying the Hypa flows you bought Not sure if I was just being over cautious,

Also, the hassle of having to re-cat for an MOT would be a pain.
I de cated my 360 and had no issuses, if you do, just get Rob to erase it, I was told 9 out of 10 360's would show no light !!!!! and if you know a good service guy the mot will not be a problem,,,,,,,,,,, talk to Rob .......Gassing Station | Supercar General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
