lost 95% of turbo power - help please
Discussion
hiya, well here we are again - cars broken and i dont know where to start. all i can really say to explain it is the turbos are doing absolutley nothing. i drove to work today in a very pretty 2.5L mondeo.
i can just about hear the turbos spooling up although very very quietly and the dump valve noise is only just about noticable. i'm not exaggerating either. 0-60 is about 16 seconds top speed 80.
the engine feels and sounds normal just there is no boost at all.
where do i start?

My 2.5 did this a year back. I said exactly the same thing re the Mondeo! There were no loose hoses and my local mechanic couldn't see anything obvious. We gave it some high revs and we could just hear a tiny amount of noise from the waste gate. What we found really odd was that both turbos failed together and I believe they are totally independant of each other. Made us wonder if it was to do with engine management. However, I spanked it around for 15 minutes and all returned to normal. Never done it again!

funny you should say that it did it yesterday and i got so frustrated i just gave it a hammering and it did sort itself out. it had its MOT yesterday and did need some work on the rear light cluster so the backs been opened up recently and they did give it a good check over as i was concerned it had developed some turbo lag. they couldn't find anything obvious and were going to investigate further when its next in to replace the lights. it first failed last night but as i said fixed itself.
i'll have a good look tomorrow but dont really know what i'm looking at. will any of the previous suggestions be obvious to the untrained eye?
thanks for the help but no joy. as far as i can see all pipes are connected. thats me stumped so have booked it into the garage on monday.
i am emailing them this thread so as a mechanic will be reading this feel free to get more technical again if you guys have any further thoughts.

James - where are you taking it? I can recommend Noble London (aka TVR Centre aka Trimar Sports) highly. Skip knows Nobles like no other. They're based at Barnet just off A1 at Sterling Corner.i am emailing them this thread so as a mechanic will be reading this feel free to get more technical again if you guys have any further thoughts.

thanks for the tip off.
im taking it to techniques in stotfold. they are 200yds from my house so i can push it there if i need to. they are a morgan race team garage / morgan road car service agent, small scale but used to odd cars that need a bit of thought. they dont usually work on turbo cars though, so although they are very usefull and helpful dont always know where to look. i am going to let them take a look monday as ideally i want them to look after the car forever more. i will not ever use a noble main dealer again but if techniques get stuck i may try your recomendation. thanks

James, if they find the problem, could you post it on the forum please. I'm curious as mine has never done it again, but you never know!
will do, not a problem
and thanks for the pointer peter.
if this is of any help i noticed this morning the boost guage is going from rest (bottom of the scale whatever that is, cant remember) to 0 as usual but is not going up past zero although i can hear the turbos spinning.
techniques did ask if it was going up to 1 bar as usual (i know, i know) and i thought it was, well it isn't. flat out on pedal and it sits at 0 while the engine runs as usual just with no boost at all.
