I guess when you drive a 1.2 Corsa, an Astra VXR is a big step up, and probably considdered one of Scotlands finest.
The reality of it is, i'm sure its not even classed as one of Vauxhalls finest

Different strokes for different folks. The VXR Astra is a laugh of a car for the right type of person. Plenty of capacity for tuning it up to be even more unruly on the road
Over-turbo'd FWD lairy hatches are pretty much the polar opposite of Lotuses, you wouldn't expect fans of one to be that enamoured with the other
If the Exige is this:

then the Astra is this:

Good, robust engine though. Would be great in an Exige...

I remember, when I was a student, in some class at uni the lecturer asked a random guy in the class what car he want, money no object.
The point of it was something to do with opinions, cultural differences and demographics (I forget exactly, I wasn't really paying attention and it was 13 years ago).
Anyway, money no object and this spotty 18-year-old replied:
Impreza Turbo.
There's no accounting for taste, especially amongst the young and daft!

I don't know... there's a perverse sort of appeal to a car that can be tuned to a metric s
t-load of power but simply can't lay it down. Especially if it's a torque-steering monster that jumps from lane to lane as you apply the power, and even better if it has a habit of wheelspinning at any speed and best of all, mid-corner as the turbo spools up.
Then again, as an 18 year old I had free rein of my Dad's Saab 900 turbo company car
Axle tramp, torque steer, bloody marvellous
The Exige is all about delicacy and fingertip control, even at the ragged edge you don't have to bully it. Sometimes a wildly uncontrollable thug of a car is fun (if a big dangerous)... my MG ZT is massively unruly but steers from the other end

Nah, just that age and mentality. When younger I had some mates that thought a Nova was the best car in the world, even if they won the lottery they'd still have a Nove and turbocharge it.....

If I was asked when younger what car I wanted, money no object then top of the list would have been an Esprit SE in BRG.
If you drive them properly they are ok. The irony is that the handling was tweaked by Lotus. Extremely fast around the 'ring but throttle mapping is too aggressive - having said that I'd doubt any Exige owners would keep up with one driving around a wet Nurburgring!
Not my cup of tea and agree with the scapel analogy but the handling balance is reasonable for a fwd.

Astra VXRS are great on roman roads, however when a bend appears they just go through a fence or hit the nearest object they can understeer into.
VXR= balls to handling just make it quicker

Had a standard Astra as a loaner when the Exige was in for servicing once. Got back ache 5 minutes into driving the thing and however I adjusted the seat it didn't go until the car went back the next day. We have them as company cars and a couple of the lads with them have said the same thing. The VXR would likeley have better seats but that aside I still wouldn't take an Astra in place of an Exige.
