Hope someone can help. I'm selling my business partners fathers car and was looking for a rough quide on price.

The car is a 1997 540i tourer with only 40k on the clock.

It's been owned by the same person from new and as been fully serviced including BMW warrenty taken out each year.

It's in dark blue with grey leather and comes with most of the toys.

All books and old mots/service bills are available.

The car is in mint condition and allways garaged.

I've seen a couple on autotrader with the usual 140k miles for about £2.5k but not sure what sort of premium the low milage and condition would bring.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think people are being optimistic with £2.5k for 140k examples!

I think you should advertise it for £2800 and take £2500

They seem to be selling though - very few 540i Tourings on AT and the ones which were up a month ago have gone.

I'd try £4k or maybe even £5k - however, it does need 17" wheels to look good and if it's on the 16" turbines, I bet it won't attract nearly as much interest.

I was thinking £5k it is on the 17", you don't get them in this condition! I'll put it on the classified and see what happens.

Thanks for the help.

Watch out!

Prices for older large cars seem to be firming-up again.

I bought a low-ish mileage 540i Touring just a few weeks ago for more than you're thinking of - and would have snapped up a 40k-miler for 5 grand!

E34 looks nicer than E39 too.
Oops - just saw yours is E39! Still I DO think E34 is better-looking, even though I bought an E39!

If you're not in a hurry, ask for more!

Just seen your ad.

It's a nice car but seems to be low on spec? and very high on price. No "angel eyes", no sports body kit, manual seats, no TV/Sat nav. Might be an idea to list everything it has and also list the service history.

If you can't shift it I would offer you 3k, live in Leeds too which is handy.

Did you buy an E34? I would suggest they are now worth more than an E39, in the right condition. Lovely things.

No, I didn't buy an E34 even though I prefer them. Mine is 2001 E39 - the nicest one I could at the time. (That said, I seem to spending a small fortune to bring it up my standard!)

Missed out on some nice-looking Alpina wheels on ebay last night too, bit disappointed about that!

Thanks for the advice guys.

Dave your right i do need to list the options. I was just in a rush yesterday and thought i'd get the ball rolling and update later.

I'll list the milage and service intervals but I know it's full and extensive.

The history of this car makes it a bit special. I don't think there are many around having 1 owner been fully garaged/serviced/warrenty and with low miles.

I'll check the spec but here's a list of the things i know.

Last serviced/mot Feb 09.

Extendable leather sports seats.

Cruise.

Multi-changer.

Climate.

17" upgraded alloys.

And obviously the usual electric/alarm/multi function steering wheel items.

Again thanks for the help.

Angel eyes are a post-facelift thing so it's not surprising it doesn't have those. I'd rather have an original car, particularly since a lot of the value of this one is in its originality.

There doesn't appear to be an enormous amount of spec on it though - sports seats are a bonus, but I can't see whether they're heated, and it's a shame it doesn't have the sport steering wheel. Not sure those alloys are the most desirable, either, but if they're not corroded then they're very rare in that state.

The seats arn't heated but are mint. It's never had anyone in the back of it! No smokers no dogs just one mature BMW owning gent. It's a rare beast and the power is awesome, gives my 996 a run for it's money and at this price it's got to be a good buy.

I wonder why people are so obsessed with mileage to the detriment of everything else? It seems bizarre that this car is worth more than mine yet mine is half its age, all because of the 'low mileage'. It's as if people forget how cruel time can be. I'd sooner have a 100k mile car than a 13 year old one.

Just musing, I know the market thinks differently and that in all likelyhood this car is worth 4-5k.

Don't disagree with the milage thing, I allways buy cars with a few years on the clock but they have to have the right history first, then condition, then milage.

No good buying a low milage with no history, no one will believe it.

If the owner and the car look right it usualy is and this car is.

Cheers Chris.

PS It's nice selling a car with no pressure to sell, ie need to sell to buy.
