Johnny Knoxville did a similar stunt pre-Jackass. If you've seen it it was the 'testing self defence equipment' bit where they taze him, pepper spray him etc. Originally, for a magazine, the end of that segment was Knoxville getting shot in a bullet proof vest with a .38 handgun. They wanted to do the same on Jackass but MTV insisted that they didn't shoot him again...

exactly.

On top of that there are vests and there are vests. Cheap and expensive, Ones that pass the FBI test protocols/or don't, woven aramids/laminated aramids.

Something tells me these boys bought at the cheap end of the market. Even with good vests there is still blunt force trauma.
