diff types...

Cleaning / painting / overhauling the rear of the cerb at moment...anyone know what diff will be fitted to my car...?

Its a 98 4.2...is it the BTR type? How do you tell?

Reason being I want to order a breather (if its supposed to be mounted where I think is should be there currently isn't one).

Is it mounted on top of the diff? If not where?

I think I`m right in saying that the GKN diff has the fins on the back plate, the other type has fins on the top or bottom?

Thanks clive - will check more thoroughly when its all cleaned up! Think the fins are on the back...

If mine is a GKN, does it have a breather and where is it?

They are all BTR - either std LSD or Hydratrak. The breather is a little cylindrical object on the top of the diff at the back. It is spring loaded and can be pushed down.

Thanks Steve - will order a new breather - sure mine is missing.

Mine just has an empty bleed nipple, it puked oil out all over the place. I put a long breather tube on to sort it.

Dont think mine has anything...just an open hole! Mine has oil all over the diff and on the chassis and exhausts...busy cleaning it all off as it stinks!

Diff seems fine...no clunks or whining, etc - going to fit a new breather.
