sag USA project
Discussion
Hi,
As of present, this is just a fleeting thought / pipe dream. My wife (English) wants me (American) to move the family back to California (better weather). This, of course, means selling the Cerb. We have just spent a month there and nothing sets me off like a TVR. I did see a Panoz at Laguna Seca, but not even that has a presence like the Blackpool cars.
My 'plan' to get a TVR into the states is a bit different - bring it over in pieces and build it as a 'kit' car. I know this has been discussed before but I believe it is possible. I'm looking at a Sag for two reasons, fancy a change if I need to sell, and they were one of the last produced cars and it may be easier to get the body and chassis.
As the speed six (never mind the AJP) would never be allowed close to California's borders, I had planned to put an LS Corvette engine in it. To keep it from sounding American and instead a bit more exotic, I was going to have a flat plane crank, much like the AJP, made for it. Yes, this would entail reducing the displacement to reduce the 2nd order vibrations, but it would definitely sound different, and have a hell of a lot more chance of meeting the California emission regs than the speed six.
Like I said, this currently is a pipe dream. Would the Sag community look on it as a b
dization of a beautiful car (like many of the Cerb boys do with an LS conversion) or just a nice way to get one of these cars in the states.
What do you think? Should I look deeper into it?, sell, move, and never look back? or keep the Cerb and send the wife to Cali?
All the best

Even here in Canada with our less demanding import laws I would think it would be a pipe dream for road use....Sorry... We only need 15 years to import so we have to stay with a 1994 or older and I understand the U.S. of A is 25 years. But there are many Wedges and older cars on this side of the pond and some of them I hear, have abit of kick to them. But then the maintainance and sourcing of parts to keep them roadworthy can be stressfull. Our newest Tiv is 29 years old and it is always "something needs doing." Just glad that I'm on the downhill side to retire so I can have more available time to work on our cars.
If you can do it I would love to know.
I own a sftware company that is doing more and more US business and think I will will end up there is about six months or so time.
I was thinking about putting my Sag in Storage as I am not going to sell it. If I can bring it over I would even if it means leaving the speed six here and putting a vette engine in it then putting the S6 back in whena and if I come back.
If not I will take it over and use it as a track toy or somethig to look at!

Isn't there a lot more to the package like crash- impact safety, airbags (or the absence of them) and so on???
Engine wise if you have enough money would it be worth to speak to the people at melling cars as they are the only ones who currently have all three engines in there books (and they have contributed to the development of two of them???) - a Hellcat may even be an alternative which would give you a TIV like feeling? - if you like the looks
Alternatively the people at power or racing green could tell you about emmissin of their lates developments (prob with the new RG ECU you could meet higher standards in a certain map???)
All IMO and only working if you have a chance to get the chassis registered

Would this be a permament move over? If not, there is a loop hole that allows a non-US approved car to be run in the country for 3 years.
As for a V8 - a lot of people believe that it should have one anyway. Personally I like the character of the S6 engine - the zero inertia on shutdown for example is like a race car - just like the styling.

There is the 'show car' way, and there are other ways to get a car over in the US on a temporary basis. I'm hoping on a more permanent basis... though the show car for the Cerb is damn tempting.
I've already replied to 1978 in a PM: my plan is to set up a kit car 'company' with the manufacturer (TVR, multipart, RG, who ever has bits to build up the car) of the parts (body, chassis, etc) in England and so I can import parts and assemble the car in America. The engine, as stated before, would be American so should hopefully meet California regulations. The only real problem with this is the car could not be registered as a TVR (unless TVR is not a registered trademark in America and that's what I call my company). That way it can be seen as a 'new' kit car. I know there are Ultimas in America so it is possible to get parts imported.
I haven't looked too deeply into it yet as I'm still not positive on the wife's plans of moving (our holiday was on revision 2364 by the time we actually left) so I don't want to commit too much effort into this until I'm sure. It seems a 'workable' way to get a tiv in the states.

Can you not have it as a show car which alows you a limited number of road miles which is how I believe John Travolta uses his on the road or there is also a Cerb in San Fransisco belonging to "TVR freak" who might be able to give you some ideas.
You can bring an unapproved car into the States under the Show and Display scheme where you will be limited to 2,000 miles per Year.Jappo said:

I'd consider a browse through the Major Mods section too for info on putting an LS into it - think it's been sort-of done already.

Damn, might as well take the Cerb in under that seeing as I barely drive it more than that over here (lack of time). But disconnecting the speed sensor would do wonders for getting past that limit!

And you think that they don't know about that trick......

I lived there for 4 years and took a few liberties with a couple of vehicles. Al they care about is the initial paperwork, after that everything is filed in a draw and never looked at. it is under this scheme that many wealthy Americans drive around in McLaren F1s, XJ220s, Bugatti ECB110s and even Mr Gates in his 959.Jappo:
