My life is falling apart at the moment and so to, it appears, is my car.

Got it back after nearly 5 months off the road for one reasno and another, glorious day and I was actually enjoying myself for the first time in a few weeks. Then the car started making a horrible metallic rattling when applying power in 3rd gear. Gear change is fine, every other gear works as normal and 3rd is fine if you take your foot off the gas. Power on and the rattle resumes, quite loudly. Am I looking at another serious failure? cry

What a bummer!
Given that all gears are selectable I would say that your 3rd gear has worn beyond service limit.
Take to Mechanic and get checked.
I hope it's something daft but I fear it may be box out time frown

Sorry to hear that, although I'm not particularly surprised - I'm sure some people thought I was scaremongering before. At least gearboxes can be fixed. smile

Last year I said my open diff had been fine in 2 years of ownership. Within about 3 weeks, bang....

Yesterday I have to admit I was ready to attach a hose to the exhaust and listen to some loud music as I slipped away... Maybe your idea is a bit more positive smile.
