A relation wants an old shape (up to 2007) petrol Mondeo on the basis that he needs plenty of room and lives 50 yards from a decent Ford dealer, but can't decide between 1.6 and 1.8.
I seem to remember the 1.8 in the Focus uses more fuel to make more noise but with no real performance benefit over the 1.6. But the Mondeo looks a bit big for a 1.6.
Which is the best for < 10,000 miles a year but mainly long journeys?
Or should he look for something different like a 2.0 or a diesel? Or even a new shape Mondeo?

I had Mk3 Mondeo 2001 1.8. 123bhp IIRC, returned 36mpg consistently, almost regardless of driving style. Performance wasn't blistering as you'd expect, but it was perfectly adequate for a bargain barge. A guy at work had an electronic toy for measuring 0-60 times which seemed reasonably accurate and it did a 9.5 on the one run I tried (think the book figure was 10.6). Never drove the 2.0 so can't really give you much of an insight on the difference.

Are you sure they fitted the 1.6 to the mk3 Mondeo, my handbook shows 1.8, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 2.0 derv
You may be right there, so which is preferable out of 1.8 and 2.0?I've got a 2.5 and get between 25-30 mpg, you should be getting mid 30's out of the 2.0 which isnt bad.

I had a 1.8 petrol in 03 and it was moderate, I think is the best way of describing it. You had to rev it to get it to do anything, but as it was petrol that was generally OK.
I now have a TDCi which is much better, but there's a trade off on servicing and repair with that engine vs the 1.8/2.0 petrols
If petrol's your choice I'd go for the 2.0 in the hope it's a bit more powerful than the 1.8, which just wasnt quite enough

I've got an 05 (May 2005) 2 litre Zetec and it's fairly well specced and fairly quick. On this year, most models (apart from LX) had climate instead of basic air-con and crusie control as well, plus many other toys (brake assist, lane change indicators etc). Mine does 31mpg but will do more if I drive fairly gently - and much more on a long run. It's also 145bhp so has respectable performance. Don't pay too much - mine's only done 35000 miles and I think I'd struggle to get £5k for it! May be for sale if you're interested!!!!
ive got a m3 2ltr duratec mundane
and i honestly cant fault it, ok its not a snarling thorougbread of an engine but it is quiet when plodding round town, reasonably economical, flexable enough to pull on the motorway without changing down, it is chain driven though so when its idling it can sound a bit odd (cos of the sound of the chain) but ive now got 103ish thousand on the clock and not had a problem plus it sound surprisingly nice for a 4pot thought a peashooter exaust when you drive it with gusto, heck i know a fella and his dads 2ltr duratec mk3 mundane has crossed 375thousand (see http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/vbb/showthread.php?t=28...
In regards to the car, its not a bad place to be, comfortable, reasonably quiet - bit of wind noise on the drivers window and i find it fogs up a bit when you are on a long motorway run due to it cooling down because of the air whipping past it, its a bit boaty simply due to the size of it (what car mondeo size isnt) but you can still drive it and have some fun on the twistys, tbh if the car drops dead on me i will probably pick up another mk3 mundane or as the 2ltr duratec lump iirc is quickly replacing the zetec as a kitcar lump i would probably just pic up a new engine with some performace tweeks and drop it in
in regards to poster aboive that is on the facelift mondels, on the pre-facelieft models you need a ghia for climate and ghia x for cruise (i dont have cruise but i dont really miss it)
