How much can I expect to pay to get my bike fixed/serviced?
Discussion
Hi all,
Been out of MTBing about 8 months but going to get my bike sorted soon. It's a 2005 Klein Attitude XV.
Problems:
-one spoke has snapped.
- needs new innertube
- needs new chain
- needs a full on service
I'm completely out of touch with prices these days, and my LBS is shut today so can't ask... So how much can I expect to pay for these jobs?
Thanks

The innertube and chain you can do yourself for no more than £20 (or £30 if you need a link remover)
Snapped spoke - depends what kind of hub it is as to how much work is required, and which side the spoke is on.
Full service - honestly, unless something is noticeably wrong with it, I wouldn't bother. For the price you could buy all the tools and do it yourself.

A 'Standard' level service where I work would be £49. That would cover the whole bike - start with a bolt check, then clean/degrease the whole drive train, lube all cables, and re-setting up the drivetrain from scratch. Checking/tightening/lubing of headset and hubs. Re-set brakes up.
Check wheels for tension/trueness.
Add on price of a new chain, plus a new spoke.
Circa £70 to have the bike back to great running order, presuming theres no other problems.
Depends if theres any serious wear to the drivetrain - how old is it? Have you measured the chain wear?
I would expect a similar cost at any decent bike shop.

Well took my 2 bikes in this am, picked them up tonight. He fixed my Trek rear mech (was bent), put a new inner cable on it, tuned it in and generally lubed etc.. He then replaced an inner cable on the Stumpy shifter, tuned it up, removed wheels and cleaned disc calipers, reseated pads etc...
All in including parts (ok minimal) = £20 !
I love this chap !

That's cheap.
Took it in (only bike shop for miles around). 40 quid plus VAT, then new chain looks like a definite plus probably a couple of other bits and pieces... Not looking like a cheap job. Hate living in an expensive area.
I would get it done on referral if you possibly can. Years ago I worked in a 'Complete Fitness' bike shop in Bath and services were at best 'minimal' against the rates charged. I am not sure if everything would be checked as if it works why change it? Usually it's the gears that make people think the bike needs work, I would always start with a good read up online on how to adjust them properly and you may be surprised at the results. Spokes are a different ballgame as a decent wheelbuilder is very important and I would tend to get someone to do this.
You can learn everything you need from here: http://www.parktool.com/repair/
I learnt enough to build my Cotic Soda up and just had my LBS build the wheels and fit my headset (as I didn't want to buy a tool or take a hammer to the Ti frame!)
