Something that was thought of in a roundabout way by condor in General Gassing, why not have a mini ScrapHeap Challenge style competition running?

Doesn't really have to be big things, maybe something out of shoe-boxes No seriously, why not have a couple of PH teams competing trying to build something out of a wrecked car, i.e. a buggy.

Or why not do it like the BBC show Panic Mechanics where Ed China and others would built wacky racers and stuff (hearses into Beach Buggies, Escort Vans into downhill racers...)

Although this would be a challenge I fear it would interupt drinking and chatting time.

There's a "reverse" scrapheap challenge we are umming and erring about currently.
The idea is:
We organise 5/6/7/ (however many teams want to enter) # of cars (all the same- sierras are pretty easy to get hold of), then each team, say 6 people in each, set about it with hand tools only. Give, say a 20 minute time limit on the activity, and give x points for a door, x points for a wing, x points for a boot, xx points for an engine/gearbox etc etc etc.....the team with the most amount of dismantled parts gets the most points, and thus gets the prize. Then we just remove the scrap parts from site, simple.

Good fun, maybe- quick to do & pretty simple to organise..........any comments?

I'd be well up for that!

Minimal tools would be needed, but can be bought by participants i'd imagine, and there are bound to be a few abandoned cars that need removal nearby. Top idea!

Similar idea, you get a 8x4 sheet of plywood and cut a 12" hole in the middle

You then have to get each bit of the car into that size to get it through the hole

Same as your idea but you'd need more hammers

Nice idea Incorrigible, but the deal we are looking at with the scrap yard would mean that the "recycled" parts would then be renderred un-sellable by them once the dismantled parts are collected....by doing the activity following the "dismantle" route, rather than the "destroy" route, means that the scrap yard providing the cars could still get their revenue back on the vehicles they donated for our fun and games.

Maybe an anger management course instead is needed (no offence)?

em, the entire likelhood is due to the time constraint, we (the contestents) would use hammers and brute force to remove said objects from the "car". Thus, due to the endearing nature of a hammer, the panels would be useless to both "Mr Scrap Man", and indeed "Mr I've Been Ripped Off By Buying Something Someone Removed With A Hammer".

You'd have to buy the cars, and then more than likely pay someone to take them away. Don't you love the world!

GOOD NEWS!

Thanks for the offers, but we are all sorted.
Just negotiated a deal with a local scrapyard to supply 6/8 cars (all the same, ie escorts/ sierras etc) for the event, all free of charge to PH, in exchange for a little mention when the website is ready.

No worries about setting about the cars with hammers either!

So, what we need now is suggested numbers of people in each team, and ideas from the different Forum sections about who wants to put teams together for the competition.
You will be able to paint & sticker/logo the cars on site if you wish, so maybe getting some sort of sponsorship for for your team could be an idea.......?

We'll look towards getting a company to sponsor the prize for the winning team.

Probably best done by email to us in the first instance (pistonfest@pistonheads.com), until the website is sorted, then we'll run a page dedicated to this bit of Sunday fun.

Well, as the self appointed car building guru's - the Ultima forum could surely front a team

There are plenty of abandoned cars scattered about on our verges - in a sane world the Council/police would be happy for you to take them away. In our stupid world, perhaps not...

I suppose a banger race is out of the question

Once the cars have been dismantled during this event, the owner will then come and collect them all, and all the bits.

can we play hide and seek with the bits, i.e. we hide em, the owner tries to find em

It is a fantastic idea, but it'll never happen, motorsport insurance, public liability blah blah

So are we taking then apart with hammers or what

Sorry Condor, but Incorrigible is absolutley correct on this point.
No banger racing possible, because this will mean us organising a Motorsporting Event, which is something completely different to what PistonFest is designed to be.....involving us opening a huge can of worms for insurance, liability, personal injury & all possible subsequent claims.
