insurance based on engine size or BHP?
Discussion
Hi all,
Just wondered what kit car insurance is based on, engine size or bhp, power to weight etc? Had a very rough qoute from sureterm, based on a 2.0l tiger at £5k, of less than £500 for 3k miles limited mileage? The guy said expect to pay twice as much for a BEC? Does that sound right...?? Seems a bit a steep although he didnt ask me anything about bhp....
The only reason i ask is I would like something around the +150 bhp mark so it is pretty quick but not crazy fast. I have seen a few nice BEC's around and a few highly tuned vauxhal redtops but will my insurance be sky high with a bhp of +200 or a BEC...??
Thanks
Ben

I'm 25 and have just insured my BEC with Sureterm for £200. No NCB used, and limited to 5K miles. Although I do live in a nice quiet postcode, which helps quite a lot. Kits used to be on CC, but then BEC's came along and that started to change. Some still do, some ask about power, some power-weight.
Blimey that is cheap! Maybe I should get you to insure whatever I buy and I will be a named driver! Is that garaged as well? What BEC was that on?
I am 29 and used no NCB, but was expensive. Strange....If there was a few hundred quid between a really fast car and a standard pinto kit car I wouldnt worry but it seems like it could be +£500 difference which would make a difference to my car decision. It was supposed to be relatively cheap to run but with insurance that high it is an expensive toy!

It could well be my postcode, as I live out in the sticks. Otherwise, my insurance has always seemed low, compared to others. I have only ever owned modified cars and I tend to use specialist brokers to insure my cars. At one place they ticked every single box in the modifications list apart from clear rear lenses. And they still needed an extra sheet of paper. Even when I first got the car, I was 22 and paid £500 then! Last year was £235.

Like all insurance the premium is based on risk. Statistics are built up over time, perhaps there isn't enough data for BECs so the premium will be higher, or they are more likely to be involved in mishaps.Im 26. 0 No claims, live in Essex which isent a cheap postcode and work in the car trade
My Insurance was £190 fully comp. £100 excess with 3000 limited mileage.
I drive a Mac1 Type9R (blade engine BEC) valued at £8000.
Sounds quite high what your getting quoted. Find something you really like BEC or CEC then try a few different ins companies. Locostbuilders has a link purely for this. I'll certainly be calling around for renewal. Its only a toy to me so I wanna keep costs right down.
Oh and talking of costs pretty much all BECS will be around £115 a year tax compared to £185 of a CEC

N. Ireland might be a factor as well.
Not really
25 in november so will loose the summer..
Quick question tho about insurance, my Fully Comp. car insurance allows me to drive other peoples cars 3rd party, could i drive the kitcar on that extension is it was registered in say my mums and name and she insured it for buttons?
I know it says on my policy "private cars" and does not cover the likes of pickup or "commercial" is a kitcar classed as a private car on the v5?
