Managed to blag a seat on a whale watching trip this morning...Apparently pods of humpbacks use the waters here as a playground on their migration. It was a glorious day today and to see whales up close was a fantastic experience. Hope you like the photos !

ETA - the photos looked a lot clearer on my PC, so I wonder if it was because I was linking from a picasa web album ? I uploaded the photos to photobucket and they seem a lot clearer ?

You must be near me in California then?? I'm at Santa Barbara and I too went whale watching today!! Small world.

I took a photo of a Dolphin next to a Whale Watching boat and emailed them a copy and was pleasantly surprised when they invited me out for a morning with them.

1. On the way out past the harbour marker, sealions

2. and a Blue Heron waiting for his breakfast

3. A feeding frenzy on the horizon led us to the Humpback whale, this is the feeding frenzy just before (pelicans diving into the ball)

4. This is him coming through the 'fish ball' from underneath with the fish trying to get out of the way

5.

6. Dolphins mopping up what the Whale missed

7.

8. Back on the beach there was a memorial (every sunday) to American servicemen who have died in Iraq since 2003 (>3000)

9. Then after an ice-cream a lie on the beach

Anybody else go whale watching today???? laugh

All taken with Canon 1000D and EF70-300 USM IS (except shore based ones)

Wow Mikee - fantastic photos - they have so much more , clarity ? than mine - this is my first DSLR and I'm still learning the ropes...Mine were taken about 6-8 miles SW from Bermuda, must be migration season in the ocean !

This was about the furthest we got from shore.

It's a great day out isn't it? I didn't see any breaching or tails like you did so I'm quite jealous! I took a risk and went without a filter and it made a big difference over yesterday's photos which were nowhere near as sharp. The lens is really sharp and has image stabilisaion too which makes the job a lot easier. Enjoy the rest of your holiday.

ETA: your top photo isn't showing up for me Juice.

I can imagine the smell, I could smell the live sealions from 400m downwind.
