Im guessing/hoping this is the right part of the P&P to plonk this query as it relates to me having landed myself with a new job and needing to get suited and booted again on a daily basis...

Now, my problem is this - I have a light grey pin stripe suit, a dark grey pin stripe suit, a dark brown plain suit, and a dark blue suit with the feintest of stripes through it. I have bought myself a selection of mainly white shirts - and now I need to finish the whole ensemble with some decent looking ties.

All the suits are relatively modern in cut, as are the shirts (as Im quite tall and slim and wanted to avoid looking like I'd turned up in my dads old suit), so what ties are good, and what are the definate no-no's of the tie world...?

All help greatfully received.

Dom

A wide selection of Disney themed ties will always create a positive impression wink

Serious face on... a range of colours and patterns (plain, stripes, dots, etc) to suit. No stripes with stripy shirts, and two or three per suit shoudl suffice.

Buy well, rather than cheap, and look after them.

Ahhh yes, the office joker with a crap tie for every event... dont wanna go down that route... wink

2 or 3 per suit hey, jeez, i'd better set this out as an ongoing investment plan then. As you say, I'd rather buy quality in the first place, but thats not cheap is it!

Okay - no stripes with stripes, thats a start!
Cheers.

I would go plain, they'll never go out of fashion and nearly always match a shirt/suit.

Dark Grey Tie/Light Grey Suit/White Shirt
Light Grey Tie/Dark Brown Suit/White Shirt
Light Grey Tie/Dark Grey Suit/White Shirt.

Simple and contrasting. Plus you'll only need to buy 2, you can splash on some real quality ones.

good advice.
Avoid fat knots.
I think modern narrow lapel suits should have narrower ties

too boring to do this everyday IMO. I think a tie is a way to express yourself. You can add a bit of colour and pattern and still look classic and stylish.

1. Old School
2. Regiment or Corps
3. Black ( for funerals)

Should suffice. HTH

Ah yes, this is also something I meant to mention at the time - Should I look to buy a wide / slim tie - and aim to tie it in a small or large knot...

Im afraid Im no tie tieing expert so it would be a case of pulling tighter or leaving looser.

I was concerned that the slimmer tie option may look almost too modern - although Im not 'an oldy' as such, I dont wanna look like a boy band try hard either.

Thanks so far!

Learn to tie a Pratt knot. Symmetrical, tidy knot but without the "Carphone Warehouse" look.

Only sport a slim tie with a slim suit, with narrow lapels and with a shirt with a smaller collar. Slim tie on a fat bloke with a fat neck in a big boxey suit would look rubbish.
Slim ties are very of the moment-so only buy with the understanding that they will have to be ditched in a few months.
They look st on most people (but great on me)
Avoid big knots as they look rubbish, if you must wear a larger knot, go with a spread collar or cut away collar shirt, they look crap though, so dont do it as you will look like a 3rd division footballer/phone shop sales person

I tend to match my ties to my shirts, I rarely wear patterned shirts, but I like to have something slightly nice looking.. But then again I only wear black suits.

Make sure they are decent ties though, obviously silk, a st tie, will tie a st knot.

usually wear a t-shirt to work, short sleeved shirt on the car seat with the tie on the floor, worn under fleece, so not a massive deal

biggest bind is that have a branded fleece with the name of the clothing company on it, as for getting fleece from work, not a chance frown

got a pile of ties in the house, when the ones in the car wear out, they get replaced with one from the pile

I've seen some hideous tie/shirt combinations in Corporateland. It's not edgy, it's not clever, it's just scensoredt.

Also, do a normal knot. Not so big that it's almost the size of your head and leaves your tie about 4" long (fashion nob), and not so small that it looks like it's been pulling in by a Veryon at full chat (woodwork teacher).

Just my humble opinion but there is no place for a brown suit in the business world. I would abandon that.

So you are trying to be edgy unless you wear a grey tie everyday?
