Kitcars, Q Plates & Cherished Numbers?
Discussion
Just out of interest.. why do some kitcars go on "Q" plate? is it to do with the donor car?
Also do you know if you buy a Q-plate can you transfer a cherished plate onto to them? like any other car?
dont know alot about this kitcar world, got a guy potentially keen on my m3 now so just looking into the finer details like holding onto my plate.

Q plate is basically when the age cannot be determined, as a very rough rule of thumb:
- Use majority new parts = current reg
- Use majority of parts from donor vehicle = age related reg of donor
- Otherwise = Q
The V5 for my Q plate states it can't be transferred (ie you can't put a cherished number on), I think this is pretty standard too.

ok so a non Q plate kitcar can have a cherished transfer done fine?
yup.If the car currently is say a 'Y' reg derived from its donor or age related then the cherished plate has to be older than that as the rules say you cannot use a cherished plate to make the car look younger than it is.

For a non-Q plate, it's the same rules as normal cars - i.e. (as Steve_D said) - you can't make a car appear younger.
There may also be some rule about if you kept your donor registration, then it remains, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
When I registered my 2007 Aeon, it ended up with a 2003 cherished plate on it - no questions asked (in fact, they even said to me "Is that a cherished plate document?" before I'd even given it to them - I was a bit worried if I needed to get a 2007 plate, and then transfer it over later on). Very painless.

i hate to spoil your day but i registered my car in february, got an age related f plate,it states on the v5 that the reg is non transferable.either dvla changed the rules or they make them up as they go along.it would be worth checking the v5 of any car you look at to make sure

Not sure if they have changed again recently but I changed the plate on mine last year. Only thing to watch for as said above if you have the donor plate on your car you cant change to anything newer even if the car was registered later.
ie. If your car was built in 2002 and first registered new then, but built from a 1992 Sierra you would likely have the 1992 J plate already on. You cant go any newer than the J plate.
My logbook says 1998 First reg with a small note at the bottom saying built from new and used parts. Mine is a G reg doner so I cant go any newer that G.
