PistonHeads is becoming a very big place, but we do have a function which makes it quick and easy to browse just the topics that interest you.

If you click 'My Preferences' at the top of the page then you will see the following tools:

By moving topics to the left hand column you can mark them as "Favourite Forums". I've picked the following:

General Gassing
Website Feedback (because it's my job!)
Classic Cars
All the new P&P forums except Business and Jobs
French Bred (I have a Citroen)
Triumph (I'm restoring one)
Caterham (I wish had one!)
Kent and Essex (My Local group)

This changes two pages, firstly the gassing station homepage now looks like this:

showing only the forums I have selected.

More importantly though, it also affects how the "What's New" function works.

By clicking on "What's New" (in the top right of most pages) I can now see the following page, which shows all the topics since my last visit. I can also show the topics for either the last 3, 12, 24 or 72 hours, simply by clicking on the corresponding link:

As you can see, it has all the car related and non-motoring topics from the forums I'm interested in, in one place, without any of the topics I don't want to see.

It can also be sorted by forum (or back to by last post) just by clicking the relevant heading. The forum view looks like this:

If I want to go back to a broader view I can just click the "Show all forums" button to see everything, both on the Gassing Station homepage and in "What's New"

Any problems or comments then just let me know below! thumbup

Will, any chance of following the "posting a picture guidelines" and resizing your screen grabs to fit hehe

They fit on my screen (once they are loaded at least!) which browser are you using?

That's great... if I had the new forums in my list to be selected! They aren't turning up here, just the old ones...

Im using IE7 (on work laptop at mo) & Screen resolution is 1024x768

When at home - FFox with the same resolution, unless I'm on the eeePC which has a screen about 100 pixels by 50 hehe

Bet you have a widescreen monitor wink

clap

So much better than my attempt biggrin

but then I was at work, and supposed to be working, rather than doing pretty screen shots, and i did just intend it as a 'quick fix' whilst you prepared the 'proper' version wink

Just to ask.

How many minutes do I have to wait for something to happen when I click on the arrow to add a forum to my favourites?

Clicked on General Gassing, clicked on the lefty arrow to add to my favorites.

The machine then hangs. Its been a minute or so.

Is this normal?

Takes ages for me, though my pc is so old it's probably made of bakelite.

Will this thread be stickied - to help new users. Or will it disappear and then new users will be left with a fractured forum and soon bugger off.

OK, having another go.

Got the hamsters to accept a list of my chosen forums to view.

I click on the what's new tab.

and the results are too bloody wide to view on a single screen. (Too many columns)

Genius,

I now have to scroll sideways as well as up & down.

Please can I uninstall PH Beta 2009, and revert back to a more stable release?

Is there a workaround for this?

What was wrong with the old mark one eye ball and mark 2 brain?

This is very much IT bods playing around to justify their job IMHO.

As I posted on another thread, it's a pain in the arse having the 'show all/favourite forums' switch acting globally. Can it be page-specific? So I can see all the forums in the main list but just my faves on the What's New page?

Better yet, put it back how it was mad

So many threads now on this subject, I'm not sure where to ask, so apologies first, but when I click What's New it brings up a long list of thread titles. Is there any way to reduce the number of threads per page after clicking What's New?

I see you can reduce the page length but this only seems to work within each thread.

I'm trying to get used to using What's New but when I'm in a normal thread (eg GG or the old P&P) I tend to read the thread titles and if any interest me I'd right click and open each one in a new tab. I'd do this until i get to the bottom of the page then go off and read those that I've opened.

Possibly a strange request, but everyone seems to have their own little ways of browsing the site smile
