Quickie Airport Security Question

Im flying home tomorrow to pick up my kit for the summer and im driving her back out to Germania.

Im planning on putting my helmet in my rucksack for carry on as it will not fit in my suitcase obviously.

Will security kick up a storm about this? is it possible to bring down a A/C with a helmet? I suppose i could headbutt my way into the cockpit.

So, do the good people of the P&P Lounge think ill have any problems?

Hi,

I work at a major airport in the UK ( in a security position )and althow not a BAA security person, they are the ones who let you airside. I cannot see a problem with any kind of crash helmet, being carried as hand carry. Unless you were to pack it in a VERY strong conatiner any helmet is going to suffer from being put in an aircraft hold.
When I had motorbikes, I would not let anyone even move my helmet for fear of dammage and unseen internal dammage that in the event of a crash would make the helmet fail.

flying to Grenoble from Birmingham i was allowed to have my Snowboard helmet as part of my hand luggage.

Coming back there were signs saying any helmets will be destroyed if part of hand luggage.

Recently my father tried to take one ski boot (don't ask me why it was just one! ) in his hand luggage and security kicked up a right fuss saying they were going to destroy it; he did eventually get it through but it was touch and go.

Not quite the same as a helmet but.............

Its very hit and miss. As someone else posted - some UK airports won't allow you to take ski boots on as hand luggage as its deemed dangerous. Theres a chance they might include helmets in that category.

i have a mate who flies quite often with a guitar.

what he does is to explain at check in that he's carrying it on and if it is a problem then he will check it in at the gate. basically he gives it to the cabin crew who put it in their storage area. any problems at security and he refers them to the carrier.

leaving it until security just brings him grief but he steadfastly refuses to put it in the hold and kicks up a fuss until the airline and/or security caves in.

I've carried my helmet on before (so to speak) in one of those 'headcase' carriers. No problems.
