My computer has decided to die (see 'puters forum for details) and its now serious. I can't do anything with it but desperately don't want to re-install XP and loose everything. Does any one know of any decent PC repairers who will do as I ask and not rip us off? Would rather travel and use someone recommended than put it with a random shop with the obligitory acne-infested oike.

Thanks

Hannah

Sorry to hear you're having trouble.

When I've reinstalled Windows before it has put all my old files in a different user account. I then simply transferred them across to my new account and once I'd reloaded the programs back on they were all able to be accessed again. I've had to do it a few times now - blame Acer laptop ste.

Winchester isn't near Cobham btw wink

I can't get that far, it won't let me do a repair install and I don't want to do a full re-install if I can help it.

Cobham from Winchester? Within an hour? Its local! To us anyway! hehe

What kind of drive is it?

If you can get it to me - I'll plug it into one of my machines and pull any data down we can (one way or another)

I used to fix those for a living, Acer don't make crap, well unless you bough a cheap ste one. hehe

Would help but I'm not around until after the bank holiday.

I had a similar experience a few weeks ago and managed to recover the lot (1.2tb) and fix the XP load on my SATA disks too.

Just takes persistance and some freeby tools off the internet... smile
(and lots of swearing!)

Do you know if the hardware failed or is the software corrupted?

If still struggling then i can pop down and have a look at the end of the week if you're still not sorted?

Thanks John, I think it is a driver file corrupt somewhere but not quite sure where. Going to try to rescue what I can with the Koppix thing then go for the complete re-install later today. With it not booting in any mode its abit of a nightmare!
