Today (at stoneleigh) i saw a guy whose S3 was parked near mine,with...
295 rears.

They were Mastercraft avenger GT 295/50/R15's. They were on the original BBS,and obviously 'bulged' (for want of a better word)out a bit to gain the width.
He told me they were american, which is why i'm posting it here.
The choice in the UK for G-car rears is almost non-existant,so i figured it would be worth throwing this in to see if anyone has heard of/used these.
Maybe the Owner of this red S3 can tell more too.

Thats all i know.

Check out www.tirerack.com and search for this size tire. They have about 5 to choose from ranging in price from $79 - $98 dollars US, and I'm sure they would ship to your side of the pond. ;-)
I have heard of Mastercraft, they are a "low buck" replacement tire that are an affordable option to say aa Goodyear or a BFGoodrich.

Never heard of Mastercraft but you are right G-rears are like rockin' horse sh*t here. Being a fussy geezer like me I wanted to keep my car to all original spec last time I needed some tyres. I sourced the very last 235/60 VR 15 (Not ZR!) from National Tyres - this after contacting Goodyear. Then the last MoT failure meant x3 nearly new Goodyears looking for a replacement offside rear?! That Robbing git Derek Dean had the last lot from the Hethel clearout and charged me £300 for the privilage! Even wanted the extra for carriage!! Glad he out of business now - tosser.
Anyway I now have a full set of as new original fit VR's. Fortunately my v.low Summer-Sunday usage means this should last..................but what then?!? The only alternatives I know of are the Pirelli - but these do not have the fat side-wall-late-70's-early'80's F1 car look! The Yokohama is I think the only option?............

Yep,If you get the chance (at a show) to look at a pirelli clad G-gar next to a goodyear, there is over an inch more width of rubber on the road on the goodyear rears.
No-one can argue that can't be better.
