Folks,

I am looking for recommendations from fellow PH'ers for a UK holiday destination this summer.

Some background:

1. It'll be me, the Mrs and our daughter who will be approx. 18 months old by then.
2. Cheap as chips would be good - I am currently unemployed and while we are not skint we are not exactly 'flush' either.
3. Reasonable gaurantee of nice weather (Mrs has two weeks off work - w/c 24th August)
4. Lots to do for our daughter, but still has nice places to eat for us in the evening.

Before our daughter was born the Mrs and I went abroad a couple of times a year so we don't have much experience of holidaying in the UK. Our last holiday as a family was one of those cheap deals through The Sun @ Haggerston Castle (and it was dire!).

Also - we don't want to spend pretty much the whole day travelling (we'll probably drive to the holiday destination) so the south coast is probably out. We live just outside Edinburgh.

Any thoughts?

Dont laugh, but the East Neuk of Fife is a good choice. Rent a small apartment and move around the wee villages and excellent beaches. The weather is usually drier (but haar can be a problem sometimes). Lots of decent restaurants in St Andrews and in the hotels in the area.

Also try around the Portpatrick area.

Me & Mrs Monkey stayed in a caravan a couple of years ago just outside Lochinver. It's actually in someone's garden but still private. They don't really advertise but if you want an email address let me know. We're off to Durness this summer with our little fella who'll be 18 months old by then & staying in a cottage overlooking a beach http://www.norsehaven.com/view/ceannabeinne-cottag...woohoo

If you fancy travelling a bit further, we've just had a long weekend near Criccieth in North Wales at a log cabin overlooking a lake & that was ace - little fella loved it.

Get a tent & head north - east coats delights around Black Isle/Findhorn way, or brave the midges out in the east - Applecross, Skye etc - all good beaches & things to do. Cheap as chips - we spend about 4 weeks in the summer camping with the kids every year - they love it, it's a great destresser and you get lots of beer - I mean fresh air.

Come down South. It's lovely here in Bournemouth (just not today though...)
