He lived in my area and I loved seeing the Enzo etc... He went by my house most days in some amazing cars. His last beast was an SLR.

Just goes to show you never know what people are up to!

I guess he can sell the Enzo and pay off his tax debt with just one car.

Doesnt surprise me at all living in the area. Everything about them always seems a bit crooked and theres some sort of story every other week in the local papers.

Screw him. If I didn't pay my taxes, life would be rather easy.

to a point I agree with you...

However, in the bigger picture, what's so different about what this guy did and what are dear bankers have been doing for years on a whole different scale?

Is it this guy that's put the world economy into recession?

has he killed anybody?

Yes, he owed the tax man £750K, but by the sounds of it, he has the assets to pay it, so unless I am missing something, seems a little harsh to me...

Bankers (and the banks they work for) pay huge amounts of tax & NI, this in part was the reason why regulation was lax.

BTW I thought that if you dodged taxes then there was a standard multiplier applied as a fine? ie. if you dodge £700k then you have to pay the £700k and a further £1.4m or something.

A UK based bank pays its tax in the UK. The vast majority of its employees are on PAYE and pay tax in the UK.

There are a few non-doms but they still buy Ferraris here, keep property here(and pay council tax here) and contribute to business here.

Anyway, getting off topic slightly.. :-)

This is exactly what the government want you to think. Don't believe everything you read in the papers.

bit too cryptic for me, what to elaborate?

I think the point is that people have got less for killing people etc...

My point was that the government want people to think that all bankers are crooks etc. It takes the focus of their (and others') immorality and culpability.

Agree with you about the length of jail time.

I know we shouldn't be judging on appearances and all that, but would you trust a guy who looks like this?

I think 3 years is a lot for what was probably a small portion of the tax that he was actually paying (assuming that he must have been earning a lot more than that to be able to afford an Enzo), but I'm surprised they didn't take more money off him than just the amount he owed.

That you choose to allow the state to bully you into paying protection money does not mean those who have the guts to make a stand are doing anything wrong.
