I bet you didn't know this!

  • Guinea pigs live wild in areas of South America.
  • The Incas used to farm them for food.
  • Even today you can enjoy fried Guinea pig in South America.
  • Wild Guinea pigs are most active at night.
  • Guinea pigs appeared in Europe in the 1500's.
  • Guinea pigs and humans don't make their own vitamin C, so they must always eat fresh vegetables.
  • In the wild they live in groups of 5-10.
  • A young Guinea pig can run when it is only three hours old!
  • In America Guinea pigs are called Cavies.
  • They are often used for medical research. That's where we get the term *Guinea Pig" from to describe somebody who volunteers to take part in a test.
  • Some species of wild Cavy can be as long as a metre.
How amazing is the common guinea pig?

I will now be interested to see where the mods move this thread to.
Perhaps the fabled 'Guinea Pig Forum'. It's a lot like 'The Lounge' except all the posts are written by guinea pigs with internet access, spouting their pro guinea pig nonsense.

So, they get their name from themselves?

Indeed, when first discovered in the 1500, they immediately volunteered to be experimented on so that they could help humanity further understand the effect certain chemicals have on living tissue.
The first to volunteer was a young, adventurous rodent, who coined the stage name 'Guineabella Pigsicle', later shortened to 'Guinea Pig'.

Did you know when you have guinea pigs that the tiny fluff ball on the kitchen floor may not be a fluff ball at all but a baby guinea pig, you should avoid standing on it.

Did you also know when the pet shop sells you two male guinea pigs they are fking lying!!!!!!!!!!!!
Soon you will have lots of fluff balls on your kitchen floor.

Yeah, tell me about it.

I bought 2 male guinea pigs about 6 months ago.
Basically, my girlfriend wanted a guard dog, but doesn't really like big dogs. After reading an article about 'Guard Llamas', I decide that a 'Guard Guinea Pig' was exactly what I was after.
Of course, because they only have little legs I needed two in order to provide sufficient perimeter protection. I bought 2 males because I thought they would be the most fierce and proceeded to put them through my own 6 week boot camp.
To make them as fierce and obedient as possible, I made them fight for food, gave them random zaps from the stun gun and deprived them of water. After boot camp they were ready to be released into the confines of my property.
2 months later and they've had 5 babies. The mother decided to eat them...frown

That was an act of kindness on the mothers part. She was clearly worried the babies would have to go through the boot camp too...

Yes, its true guinea pigs are often used in medical tesing. However, if penicillin was originally tested on them it may never have been passed as a medicine as it is toxic to the little pill popping pioneers.

The boot camp does not accept minors on it's course. I'm sure the mother would have been proud of her children enrolling into the 'Guinea Pig Homeland Defence Force'. Alas though, she was peckish...
