X5 needed new brakes and disks all round. Sytners quote was £260 over and above my Indi based in Hayes. Sytner asked for the details and said they could price match them.

End result £260 in me pocket and genuine BMW stamp in the book biggrin

Though Id let you guys know that Sytner BMW High Wycombe will price match any genuine quote is the Indi uses genuine BMW parts.

My 130i is due an oil service next month. What is the name of the indi you got a price from so I can see what they quote?

Sytner Solihull said they would do the same as long as the indy is listed in the yellow pages as a BMW specialist.

Ocean Plymouth will do this as long as you get a quote in writing.

Which no local indy is prepared to do anymore.

If you're paying the same price then I would rather have the specialist see to the car rather than the main dealer. It will get looked after properly and you won't get bum info on other things that need doing (yu always need new brake discs/pads, windscreen wipers etc etc).

That's been my experience with Saab main dealers anyway, if you know your indy is good then stick with em, the stamp is just as valid in my opinion.

Bar re-sale don't see what the big deal is with main dealer servicing, ours are a bunch of muppets that I doubt could 'fix' anything, just replace, replace, replace.

Great if you need the stamp but I'd rather go to someone who's business model relies on their reputation rather than surviving in spite of it.

Fair enough comments but Sytener HW look after both my 535d and X5 and they have been great so far.

I agree with others who say stick with indies, some main dealers are price-matching but they will then try and stiff you with extra's - "oh you need new brake pads/discs/tyres etc". A good indy will do a much better quality job and look after your car with probably a more experienced mechanic. How can the afford to drop there prices by half - rush jobs!

Agreed - my wife's car was in with Honda (who I had haggled about 25% off the service quote by getting a quote from another local main dealer) and they called to say it needed 2 new tyres and wiper blades. When I pointed out that I had fitted new wiper blades 2 weeks previously, they told me that they were both split so risked damaging the screen. When I collected the car, both blades had amazingly become unclipped from the arm at one end so were scraping the screen, yet clipped back in around 3 seconds. The 'almost bald' tyres have about 3mm of tread left on them so to say I was slightly annoyed is an understatement! I emailed the service manager who has completely ignored my email so as the car is out of warranty later this year, I will be using my local indy from now on.

The problem is the resale, more people than not will prefer a BMW stamp in the book. If they will price match, then great.

If they tell me I need new brakes I'll tell them where to shove them, as I know I dont!

Bet your Indie is made up with you!

(and do you really get a stamp for brake work?)

Not sure about that, guess it depends how old the car is, if its say 3yrs or older i don't see it as an issue if its a recognised indie.

What you guys have to remember is that this forum is run by enthusiasts for enthusiasts so it's all good you guys saying you'd be happy with Indy service history. BUT (depending on the car - Id say anything less than 5 years old) the common man/women out there will be looking for Full BMW service history fullstop + if you try to part exchange the car you'll always be offered less with Indy history as compared to FBMWSH no matter how much sense you try to drill in to the dealer head!

Im talking from past experience here I tried to sell a 51 reg BMW 318i SE with parital BMW SH and part recognised Indy but I had people walk away from it. When I tried to part exchange it I was being offered up to £700 less.

ETTO I guess but for me Id rather have the stamps/SH from BMW if its the same price as an Indy.

I just tried to get Sytner HW to price match North Oxford on an Z4M Insp1 (£850 vs £650) but they refused to pricematch and said £750 was the lowest they would go...
