IAM Gift Vouchers

Institute of Advanced Motorists have the answer to your present worries

The Institute of Advanced Motorists will be offering gift vouchers this Christmas in a fancy new gift thing type box. The IAM Skill for Life gift token in the gift box has all the elements of the advanced driving course and is a suitable gift for somebody who enjoys their driving and wants to polish up their road skills.

The manual, Pass Your Advanced Driving Test, the enrolment details and a listing of the 200 plus IAM groups around the UK together make the ideal gift. The test itself is also included and so is the first year's membership subscription to the IAM for those who pass.

According to independent research, an advanced driving course will reduce the chances of a crash by between 50 and 70 per cent according to independent research.

So, forget the socks and novelty hankerchiefs. Get 'em some fun in the car.

Unfortunately they don't tell us how much they cost...

Anyone got any more details on this?

Is it an IAM course that is required in order to become a driving instructor?

When I did my IAM test, the format was:

you join the local group (£5 for the group I joined).
then you get paired with an observer.
then you go for "observed drives" at mutually agreed times, so, once or twice a week, with you practicing stuff learnt in between.
then, once your observer thinks you are good enough, you get checked by another observer, and you go for your test. this is a 1-2 hour drive with a police driving examiner, and they prefer a full commentary (which you've been practicing).
Once you pass, you pay membership to the IAM, and optionally to the local group. My local group is still a fiver. IAM membership is £15 IIRC (need to check).
so basically, costs are: local group embership, exam fee, IAM membership. some groups do a package price that you pay up front, which includes the 1st years membership, and the exam fee.
IMHO it's well worth doing.
