I've got a sports exhaust and it's quite loud and a bit more 'throaty' than standard, so all you need now is for someone to tell you what a standard exhaust and de-cat sounds like, and make the decision.

De-cat by far the cheaper option i'd have thought.

Get him to phone Tim @ ACT and discuss exactly what he wants. There are various permutations of cats, silencers and pipes to get the volume and tone just how he wants it.

My local exhaust shop wants like £100 a piece and im sure i saw them somewhere for cheaper than that.

Ditto

Bought mine de-catted and it has a 3" stainless steel exhuast that can only be described as sports! Its loud and proud as they say!

Good fun (the popping and banging particularly!) but can be a bit excessive at times...

Why not do the decat first and see what you think?

If you are not happy (or think you could be happier...) then invest in a suitable exhaust?

The decat is the chaeper option, but come MOT time you'll need to *make arrangements*, so in the long term I'd have said the sports exhaust is less bother.

Mine came with sports exhausts, but in reality is a pain when you need to hit db targets on track, especially now the "ring marshalls" don't allow sticky-out cans.

Couple of hours to swap straight thro pipe sections for Cats prior to an MOT or...better if you can find a 'friendly' MOT testing station that can pass the car de-catted.

In terms of MOT and noise, my local station has told me I will get an 'advisory' as there are no such things as standard TVR replacement exhausts anymore and there is no bench mark for them anyway...down to testers opinion, hence the friendly comment.

Track days are a no no for my car...good point though if trackdays are intended.

mark, did you drive through Brighton this morning? Heard/saw a yellow Cerb, not mine (I hope), not Ridds, so that leaves you or the mystery Worthing Yella one

I hope not! car should be tucked up under its sheets in the garage! It must be the mystery one that is spotted in Worthing periodically.

Aren't they just!!! wink That's why I bought a silver one! biggrin

With regards to the OPs question. My car came with a sports exhaust but it only took me a few weeks to get some decats for it, and it was definately worth it thumbup

I've run with both systems.

I found the sports exhaust a bit to much & wasn't doing my ears any good. Pops, bangs & flames were brilliant though smile

I'm quite close to the neighbours, so giving them 110DB at 6am every morning was going to stretch our relationship eventually.

My 4.2 has a standard exhaust & de catted. Sounds reasonably quiet but makes a mad screaming/racing car/rasp when you give it some smile

Sports exhaust and de-cats sounds fab imho - but quite raucous tongue out.

I have just removed my sports pipes in favour of a standard 4.5 exhaust box (more trackdays to do this summer) - still sounds great - maybe not so throaty/Marlboro reds - and still pops and bangs at the slightest provocation.

Will be selling sports pipes if you're interested wink.

My 4.5 has a sports exhaust & its de-catted,great for sound.pops & bangs etc. but crap on a long journey cus it gives me a headache. Also i find with the de-cats the cabin is cooler cus you dont have the two silencers right underneath you.

Sports exhausts are great but make sure they're fitted right. When they heat up they can move around a bit and cause a bit of rattling (though you can't really hear it when it's popping and banging).

Off topic: How can I get smilies in my message? Before, when I've clicked the one I want above it comes up as the topic, rather than where I want it in my message.

When you reply you will see the word "smilies" just below the actual smilie faces and above the box where you write, click on that and a new box opens with all the smilies in smile

In the couple of years I've had my car I've tried all configurations

standard box + cats

standard box + decat

sports + cats

sports + decat.

The noise off the sport + decat option is insane but impossible to live with the noise inside the car at anything near motorway speeds for any length of time (I found out the hard way in France for over a week).

Presently I've got standard + cats since the car went for it's NCT (Irish equivalent of the MOT but even stricter).

I'll soon be going back to the standard box + decat as it gives the car a nice sound but still remains practical for regular use (and is ok for most track days).

I have linked de-cats and a non standard exhaust (not sure if its a 'sport' one) and its bloody noisy, almost a little to noisy after a few hours, but great fro driving about town.

As people have said, try the cheaper de-cat option and see how you like it!
