Number of members viewing a forum/thread?

Can this be done? I have seen it on other forums.

I think it is a useful guage as to whether your thread is likely to get much response.

I think this was looked at a while ago. There was a massive performance problem with it and I can see how, looking at how most systems implement it. I'm sure it's on the nice to have list however.

It may be possible but I'm invisible!
(On preferences I've ticked the prevent others from seeing if I'm online box)

I do know what you mean though, back in 2001/2 I did a lot of Fathers Rights stuff (before F4J were doing their stunts) and did wonder if I was talking to myself and had a whinge about it, turned out plenty of people were reading but had nothing to add (people didn't +1 back then).

As you say, it is useful if you have a specific/serious/important question/thread to post and want to guage the likelyhood of a response.

yes it may have been a good bullst filter.

There may some mileage in it for the specific marques forums for the tricky stuff (using me as an example again I'm desperate for a specific car seat so knowing people have seen my theoretical thread would be reassuring) but imo it'd need to be switchable so you could browse in an office friendly style for a bit of stealthy browsing.

Could Shaw Tarse's point about being able to make yourself invisible apply here? I.e. you could decide whether to show yourself - I imagine most would.

There isn't space to have a list of names on a thread like they on VBullitin so I had assumed you were talking about a view counter.

Either/or to be honest. View counter would clearly be less burdensome.
