Well, we all know speed kills and so we must have more speed cameras but having just been up the A34 past Oxford over the weekend I have a comment to make.

I used to travel this road every few weeks and it was 70mph (national speed limit dual carriageway). Then a few years ago they made the section closest to Oxford 50mph (I didn't understand why until I went through at rush hour once). However, I seemed to be the only person that took any notice of this change as most people zoomed past me at 60+.

I always expected them to put speed cameras up but oh no, they never appeared. However, not having been up that way since May I now noticed that they have 3 (yes 3) flashing signs in each direction - you know, the ones that flash the speed limit if you are 1mph over it. Two close together just after the change in speedlimit and one about half way through the limit. I ended up being just about the fastest car on this whole section doing exactly 50mph according to my very accurate TVR speedo (don't laugh it was tested through Bruntingthorpe's speed guns) - and I didn't set a flashy sign off once.

So, how many people do you think would have been doing under 50mph if they had put speed cameras up instead?

Too right, Bruce.

The Transport Research Laboratory recently studied these things and found they're more effective than speed cameras.

We need to ask government why they're not pulling down Gatsos and replacing them with these devices.

Abso-bl00dy-lutely - It has been discussed on this, and many other sites for ages - The really stupid thing is that us drivers, the people who, between us, do millions of miles a day, the ones who enjoy driving, the ones who do it best (or at least the most the most enthusiastically), know what makes a safe driver and a gatso does not make a safe driver, it produces the complete opposite, but the real solution does not generates revenue, therefore we are all MAD (xcuse pun).

I really hope that the current media attention helps to produce safer roads, and I mean the attention around the revenue generation of gatsos and the fact that road fatalities and road crime have gone up since BiB’s (no fault of theirs) reliance on them.
