Our house is two storey with a loft conversion on top making three storeys. So far all we've had is individual fire alarms stuck to a couple of ceilings (one of which has the battery disconnected because the OH keeps burning stuff when cooking).

I'm thinking that a linked system would probably be a sensible upgrade.

Anyone care to recommend a brand or system? Or should I just ask the fire brigade to pop round and advise?

Fire Brigade will give you free advice, but go to any diy shop and get 230v ones with battery back up.

Link the detectors with 3-core cable so that when one activates it sounds all the detectors.

If that dont make sense, do not fear they all come with instructions

Thanks,

I was thinking mains linked with battery back up, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that if you do that then the wiring regs require that you have a seperate circuit for the fire alarms - which would mean a new consumer unit because ours is full.

I'll talk to the fire people and see what they say.

Do you have an intruder alarm? You can link the fire alarms to your intruder system so that if onegoes off it sends you a text or email.
