I've come across a pair of OEM Hella angle eyes, on from a 2001 and the other from a 2002 E39.

Mine is a '98 E39 540i....anyone know if they are just a straight swap, plug n play, or is there some additional wiring/control gear needed???

Yes, straight swap.

The ones I got off of ebay (Hella OEM) came with a wiring adaptor to match old with new.

I'd suggest going the whole nine yards and swapping out the side repeaters for clear ones, and the same with the rear clusters. Makes a much tidier job.

No, it is not a straight swap.

The prefacelift cars need a wiring adaptor and a bracket to fit the Angel Eyes, and you also need to bend some aircon pipe out of the way.

I didn't have to bend anything out of the way to fit genuine Hella's to my 1999 E39.

Apparently you also need an adapter cable/adaptor kit. This can be bought from Euro Car parts for £35.

Might as well give it a go for what it's going to cost i.e. half the cost of just ONE new headlamp!

Did mine a few years ago and I certainly didn't bend any A/C pipes out of the way or can recall fitting an additional bracket.

Wiring adaptor is all I needed.

They are the same indicator, the only difference is the bulb. They look more orange if you dont look at them head on. Either way, you can fit silver-type indicator bulbs if you want. The actual headlight unit is the same.

For £300 my Hella set included everything I needed, brackets the lot, one of the rings is quite dim though so I need to get that sorted.

My plan is as follows.

Ebay currently has one o/s and on n/s headlight from 2 different sellers.

They are currently at £50 and £55 with no bids. Total inc p&p will be £120...if I win them with no other bidders. Will need a pair of adapter cables from ECP £35. And a pair of bottom mounting brackets wth fixings, should be no more than £15 (according to realOEM).

So that's £170 all together. I should then get a fair price for my existing lights, they are in mint condition.

Now I've written that lot down, I can't be bothered smile

Where did you get them for £300, that's not a bad price.

Just noticed.

These ebay lights don't have a ballast included.

I'm assuming I need a box of electricity as in this pic

I have no such fancy box in my car which looks like this....

I'm really confused now. Do I need that ballast box of tricks for the lights on Ebay, they are from a 2001 and a 2002 car. I think I'm gonna give up with this idea as I may end up with a couple of expensive paper weights.

Hang on....am I getting my Xenons and Halogens mixed up.

Mine are Halogens (I think) so don't have the ballast. The ebay angel eyes are halogens too by the look of it and should just plug into my existing wiring (with the adapter).

Is that right, is it only Xenons that need the control gear?

A word of advice before buying used Angel Eyes.

The headlight lenses are polycarbonate and are sealed units. They cannot be replaced.

Over the course of time and mileage, they become pitted and dulled as stones hit them etc etc, this begins to reduce the light output and also makes them look rather shabby. For reasons known only to those who bid for things on Ebay, this doesn't seem to affect their value.

So, I bought a virtually new set used for only 1 month for £205. They were absolutely spotless and unmarked. I then sold my cars original factory angel eyes, advertised correctly as '6 years old and thus shows wear, tear and pitting on the lenses' for... £201.

Not a bad upgrade for £4. Make sure you dont buy somebody elses castoffs!

The difference in light output was incredible!

^^Yeah, I appreciate what your saying

I've just been over and picked up this one

He also had the mounting bracket. Paid £65.

The lens covers seem to be in perfect nick thankfully.

I just need to make sure I win the auction for the other side. There's already me and another bidder with 6 days to go....bugger!...I can't pay more than 100 quid for it really or I might as well have just shelled out for a brand new set! Such is life smile

I intend to do the same and sell my existing lights once these are in. The car is a'98 but only has 44k on the clock hence the headlights are really as new. Should get a decent price for them I hope.
