Hi all,
Just looking for a bit of help. I have recently bought a 96 528i auto to use as a runabout. After spending a few quid and many hours and skinned knuckles on replacing shocks, discs & Pads and some of the bushes it got through an MOT a couple of weeks ago. Recently I have had problems with it stalling and hesitating through the rev range. On investigation, there seems to be a leak from around the inlet manifold gasket. Has anyone DIY attempted pulling the inlet manifold? I have hunted through postings on this forum and others, but cant find much detail on it. Im reasonably competant with the spanners, and dont mind putting the time in. Will just take it to a garage if its an overly skilled job though.

there isn't anything technical, but it takes a bit of time unbolting everything, and disconnecting hoses (and remembering where they came from)

Check the vacuum advance pipe under the plastic engine cover and the air filter to manifold connection. Both of mine had splits when I first got her.

Thanks Guys,
The noise definately seems to be coming from around the gasket rather than any hoses, but will go at all the hoses and gasket again with more carb cleaner and see if I can find exactly where it is coming from. The problem in trying to diagnose where the leak is, is that it idles pretty steady all of the time around 700rpm, only stalling when slowing down at lights, or pulling away rather than running erraticly at idle all the time.
Do the fuel rail/ injectors need to be removed and if so how is the best way to deal with that?

Also any idea if a 1996 e39 has an OBD2 port on it and if so where? or is it one of the earlier OBD ports under the bonnet? would like to get the fault codes of it before I start replacing bits

Gavin

My 99 has OBD under the bonnet, it's located on the offside wing. Some of the codes weren't readable with a generic reader on mine.
