Rare Weber DCO4 carbs

I'm following this auction with fascination. Rare original stuff and the reproduction DCO3 carbs sell for £7,500 without the manifold. It finishes tomorrow and it wouldn't surprise me to see nearer £10,000 at the end. It'll be interesting to see!

XKD605, the JDHT Longnose has got DCO4's on it numbered 1, 2, and 3.

apparently (don't know if i was being bullstted) they were offered £75,000 for them

Under eight grand. Not bad but it seems fairly obvious from the buyer's name where they have gone! I reckon a cheap purchase to sell on!

An old topic with a severe warning. This took a long time to resolve, but have a look - I mean a good look - at the carburettors shown here which were advertised on Ebay. Now a DCO4 is as rare as hen's teeth so to see a set of these turn up on Ebay was frankly incredible. The bidding was frantic, and the final price was in excess of £7,500, which in the scale of things today isn't dear for what they are - or purported to be.






Except that, on examination, you'll see that the photos are carefully taken from above, and the actual carburettors aren't shown. The perpetrator of this fraud had carefully fabricated the covers and the serial numbers and underneath were three bodies of modern DCOE45's, worth a maximum of £900. Believe me, it took the buyer some time to get his money back, and apparently the seller is very active still on this front. So, if things look too good to be true be sure they are, and as they used to say in a popular TV show, "Be careful out there".

Stranger thing have happened, I mean XJ13 bought his engine off eBay.
But oh boy do you have to be careful. I now only buy using Paypal and pay using a credit card that way the credit card company in the UK own the problem.
There is a scam where they sell you something which isn't right, you complain and they send you the money back, but offer to sell you the correct thing. And you then send the money back to them - now it hasn't come from your credit card its come from your paypal account and so the card firm isn't responsible and the perp only has you to deal with.
Been ripped off on eBay, not for quite that much, but in the 1000s buying computer equipment. As you say "Lets be careful out there" but there are bargains to be had. I've bought computers worth more than my car for a couple of grand.

I should add that I took cash and a burly friend. You really do have to be careful with eBay. There was no way I was going to hand over any cash until I had seen the engine with my own eyes. We also recced where it was stored the night before. As it happened, when we met the seller the next morning he turned out to be a complete gentleman.

It got better than that. I managed to find an original "Dash One" ZF transaxle earlier this year - the same type as originally installed in the XJ13. It was still in its box from the 1960s in Arizona of all places. The owner bought two, installed one in a Pantera, then kept the second as a spare. He listed it on eBay early this year and I got it for very little money considering its scarcity and condition. By chance it also happened to have the same ratios as the one fitted to the original XJ13 It was a bit of a pig to get here but worth it in the end.

It is currently with the person who worked on the later "Dash Two" transaxle fitted to the car Bryan Wingfield built for the collector Walter Hill.

If you are cautious eBay can be your friend!

EDIT: changed "as originally installed in the XJ13" to "the same type as originally installed in the XJ13" - don't want anyone to think I am making any false claims! ... although I will be including a piece of the original pre-crash XJ13's bodywork in my car (watch this space!)
