Ever bought a watch you thought you just had to have, only to find that actually it wasn't nearly as impressive as you imagined it would be? Or for whatever reason you just didn't rate it?

For me, I was just underwhelmed by an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in SS/Gold that I part-exxed a beautiful BlanPain Fifty Fathoms Anniversary for:

I got one like this:

For in exchange for one like this:

I should have kept the Blancpain, so much so, I think I might have to buy another.

Why did you part-ex it then?

Not sure really. I had convinced myself I wanted a Royal Oak, it was only when I got home I began to be underwhelmed. It was a moment of madness, but hey ho... plenty more watches in the firmament...

I keep thinking of getting an AP too but something stops me from pulling the trigger.

What was it that you were disappointed with?

It just didn't feel that substantial (or expensive) in my opinion. Maybe I have a tendency toward "chunky/weighty" watches (over the years I have owned numerous Rolex, Omega, Panerai, Corum, Blancpain, Chopard etc etc) most of which have either been chronographs or divers/sports style pieces.

Whenever I have strapped on a Patek or Vacheron or something similarly slim and refined I often hear the voice of the accountant in Jurassic Park - "Is it heavy? Yes? Then it's expensive!"

Totally irrational I know.

Do you have a "new" style BP Fifty Fathoms?

I had the one in the photo I posted above. Haven't got one at the moment. Might have to buy another though...

Oddly, it's a watch I keep around. It's my G-Shock Cockpit Series. I bought it because I wanted something very robust and a bit orange.

The disappointment comes mostly from the bracelet. It's absolutely godawful. Flimsy, garishly blingy, skinny, and with a horrid clasp. It also sits a good 3 or 4 mm higher on my wrist than even my PO, which by any measure is a big bugger. It's all out of proportion.

And that picture (and all the others on the interweb) flatter it quite a lot. The LCD components aren't anywhere near as clear as that in real life.

I'm more tempted by a BP than an AP at the moment.

I would. Blancpain are in the top five makers IMHO. Absolutely beautiful watches and exquisitely made.

Pretty rare too.

I'm picking up another Vacheron tomorrow (it's like getting a new car, almost) but the BP could be next on the list.

I once bought a Breitling Aerospace with a leather strap off ebay, having never tried one on.Im used to chunky heavy watches and it just didnt suit my wrist at all,it was smaller than I thought and also very lightweight(probably due to the fact it was made from titanium).I wore it for a week or so then put it straight back on ebay.
Although not an actual purchase I once wanted a Cartier Tank Francaise 'oblong' version in solid gold.It was a watch I lusted after for a very long time, and when the funds were available I tried one on however it looked awful on my wrist and didnt suit me at all.

It's an Overseas Dual Time with a black face.

I'm a little bit excited.
