I'm thinking of buying a new X5 s.d which is at my local dealer for just over £42000. I'm currently doing just over 25000 miles per year and though my 335D touring has been fantastic, the arrival of a new family member and having three dogs i'm finding i need a larger vehicle.
If anyone here runs a X5 with the s.d engine i'd really appreciate your input in general running costs and living with one on a day to day basis.
Also there seems to be quite a few x5's at dealers these days. The discount i've been offered makes buying used pretty pointless but i would appreciate any input on on any deals they have been offered.
Cheers

We've got one which the wife uses most of the time. Regarding purchase costs we've had ours 6 months now however paid £38k for it. It was however a ex-management car at 6 months old with 4k miles on it and loads of kit. Probably better deals to be had today.
Regarding running costs ours does early 20s in terms of MPG which isn't bad at all.
Regarding living with day to day I really like this car. It's a massive step forward from the previous generation X5 (of which I still have one as well) in all respects. Very comfy (even with 20" wheels and dynamic package), it's not sports car but does go round corners well (for it's size). It's plenty quick enough for a family car and power is accessible. IMVHO the xenon (spelling?) lights are a must have.
In short a great and comfy family car with enough power to make progress.

I did something similar, moving from an LCI 535d M Sport to a new model x5 3.0d - for similar reasons too - we've two retrievers. If anyone here runs a X5 with the s.d engine i'd really appreciate your input in general running costs and living with one on a day to day basis.

Be very aware that no matter what the dealer says, the x5 is considerably harder on fuel than its saloon equivalent. I could get 37mpg on average in my 535d, but got 28mpg on the same runs in the x5, so budget for about a 30% hike in your fuel bills. Given the finance costs and then fuelling costs it all got a bit silly and didnt seem worth it to me.
I kept mine eight months before returning to a 535d M Sport - i put a detachable tow bar on it and bought a dog trailer.

Chipper - nowt wrong with an X5 but I'd have thought a 535 touring would be there more obvious choice if the 335 is getting too small ? I wouldn't have thought the X5 would be much bigger inside than a 3 series touring ?If anyone here runs a X5 with the s.d engine i'd really appreciate your input in general running costs and living with one on a day to day basis.

Well i've been down to the dealer today but i just coundn't get the deal i wanted.
I was tryi ng to go down the route of a GFV due to how much i've lost on my 335D, but it basically ment that with my mileage over 30 months it was going to cost me over £34000 for two and a half year ownership!
The other fact is there seems to be loads of X5's at dealers at the moment, aswell as M3's. I'm going to have to sit back and wait a few months and then try to buy used for a change.

How does she get on with everyday things like parking at Sainsburys and in multi-storeys etc? The rear width of the latest X5 seems huge.I'd love to have an X5 but it would need to be the family car during the week - I do too many business miles to make running an X5 as my car sensible.
BMW GTV on an X5 3.0sd sport is approx £15k! after 3 years/36k miles
When I was looking to buy a new one last month, 3 BMW dealers (following a hard negotiation) were offering X5's with list prices of approx £54k for £40k. Many of these stock X5's have been either sat at a compound or in dealer stock since Sept/Oct last year.

I would just like to say that I have been driving these Machines for the last 6months and can say that they are a brilliant piece of kit. At present I mainly drive a 55 plate 3.0D which has got 143000+ miles on the clock and I also drive a new shape 57 plate which has covered 78000miles and out of the two of them i prefer the old shape.
In terms of performance they carry this off excellent,I only use it in manual mode as I dont like Auto's and it goes well, most of its work is on the Motorway and it is done at speeds well into three figures going from job to job.
In terms of reliability well what can I say they are un burstable and I mean that,in the time we have had them which was late 2005 they have had total downtime of around a month and that was only due to poor service from our workshops, they get serviced every month and the brakes replaced at the same time.
As for mpg I dont really take this into account but what I can tell you, is that I can do anything from 50miles to 250miles in a shift and when fuelled up I normally put about 35 to 40litres and this all depends on how hard it has been driven during its shift.
When I first saw that we were getting them I thought that they would not be a patch on what we had at that time which was Merc MLs and Range Rover which for reliability and performance these two machines were in my opinion and only mine crap to say the least.
After about the first week of them arriving they were a joy to drive and the performance could not be matched by the other two,if I were to be in a position to afford such a vehicle I would opt for the X5 anyday however if you want to go off road for whatever reason a lot then perhaps the RR is the one for this and this is the only way it has supremecy over the BMW.
Room in the back well theres plenty and the load carrying capacity is more than ample as well bearing in mind that we run with the rear full every day so this has to be taken into account, when looking at fuel comparisons.
This is just my own personal opinion based on daily driving in all types of road and weather conditions.

Got an SD with full spec ran it for near on 6 months now.
Its a great car - in my mind all the car you will ever need as it just about ticks all the boxes.
Handles comparably to a well sorted luxocar/ 5 series touring (according to Autocar the 3.0 regular d is quicker round MIRA wet handling circuit than a Cayman S) and has enough shove for the public highway. I bought mine after an M3 and series of other performance cars. I wanted a SUV with performance didnt like the cayenne and found the RRs a bit truck like.
As for MPG mines averaging around 27mpg in mix of mainly town driving. I get over 30mpg on a run.

She is however 5ft 2" so does like quite amusing in such a large car.
