Garmin Nuvi route planning...

OK, here's hoping someone on here has already been through this and knows the answer because it's confusing the hell out of me guys

I have a Garmin Nuvi 760 with European mapping. I want to plan a route. I have a .gpx file from a friend and I also have the free Garmin RoadTrip software for generating and uploading routes. Whether I copy the .gpx file from my Mac to the Garmin/GPX folder or use the application to install the route I still cannot see it in the Routes menu option. If I plan a route on the Nuvi I can then save it as a route that shows up in the Routes menu option. Needless to say I'm confused! What am I doing wrong when installing the .gpx file? Does it have to have a specific filename? It's not a long route so I don't believe I'm blowing any limits. Any ideas guys? All advice gratefully received...
