Often wondered and was just out in the car taking a pic of my lights.

What is this slot thing for?

Is it a touring?

Looks a bit like the clips to hold the luggage cover/dog guard when not in use

Graham is correct - the retractable load cover thing on the Touring slides in there when you remove it from its normal position. I would imagine they're not present on the saloon.

Bloody heavy things; I unscrewed mine once to remove the rear seat base. You could probably save 100kg+ by taking the rear seat of the Touring out entirely...

and whats even better is you can place it there with seats down and still use the netting to hold the load in place, the net will stretch to the roof, really handy feature

Does get in the way if you want to remove the load cover but still have people in the back, though. And it wouldn't be necessary at all if the roller blind housing wasn't so over-engineered that it weighs 20kg or so. I suspect it contributes to the structural rigidity of the car when it's in its proper place...
