Hello Guys!

I'm a n00b here!

I'm in the process of buying a Robin Hood series 3, its got quite a few trick bits on it, and hopefully should be quite smart.

Its using a XR4i gearbox mated to a quaife LSD with stupidly low ratio, (tops out at about 115 at 7.5k)

Its using the XR4i hubs front and rear, with cossie brakes, so its pretty sorted in that way, and has Ohlins coil overs on it to keep the nose down! smile

BUT!!!!

The engine, a pinto ( frown ) is knackered!

I think im going to go Zetec for now, but how does one differenciate between them.
For example, a 1993 Mondeo with a 2.0 in it, is that a zetec, or should i be looking for a 1999 one??

I've been told about the "Black top" engines??

Can anyone set me right with these please??

Similarly whats the crack with these Duratec engines, or is that the earl mondeo engine?? If so, are they any cop?

What do the engines go like on standard management? or is it wortht he extra grand on a carb set up??

Many thanks to anty replies guys ad gals!!

Tobe

.Adam.

I'm no expert, but the Duratec is newer than the Zetec, and is both lighter and a bit more powerful. Also, the exhaust is on the same side as your Pinto. If you fit a Zetec, you will have to cut a hole in the other side of your car for the exhaust.

Burton Power's catalogue has a brief history of zetec/duratec information in. Im sure if you called them and asked, your questions would be answered.

p.s. sounds like a great car

Sounds to me like you would be better off replacing the Pinto with a rebuilt, maybe uprated unit.

Sure, the more modern engines are better, but they are not that much better for what it is going to cost you in time, money and effort to fit one and get it working properly.

The difference just isn't big enough, unless maybe you are thinking of getting involved on some competition of some kind, in which case you won't want a Robin Hood anyway.

The Zetec is iron block ally head the duratec is all ally. Again I only know what Adam said but duratec is the engine with more potential. Its lighter too

The Duratec would need a new bellhousing/ adaptor to fit though, huh? The Zetec ough to bolt up just fine...

I’ve just replaced the Pinto in my Ginetta with a Duratec. I chose it over the Zetec as it responds better to light tuning mods, they are relatively cheap and have the exhaust on the same side as the Pinto. Stuff you will need are a bellhousing, flywheel, clutch, clutch actuator, clutch master cylinder and exhaust. You might also need a new sump pan and water rail but you might get away with out. I also got a new alternator, mount and remote oil filter. Apparently the standard ECU has loads of eco gubbins on it that’s quite tricky to get it to work in kit car without a bit of work so I decided to go with throttle bodies and MBE ECU. I got all my stuff from Raceline, they are a nice bunch of guys and will normally give you a discount if you drop by on a Friday afternoon. They also specialise in Zetecs so you should give em a call as they could advise you on what to do.

In hindsight I wish I sent the Pinto off to Scholar to be rebuilt as it has not been worth all the money, blood, sweat, tears, time and headaches. And I don’t know how it goes yet as it still isn’t finished.

Brave of you to say that, it might stop someone else from doing the same thing (not saying you did anything wrong, but it's a lot to do with the overall value of the car and the use to which it is going to be put)

I would like to think that my cars value has gone up a bit as the Duratec is quite a desirable engine but I’ll only know when I come to sell it. Hopefully I now have a reliable car with lots of power that will be good on a track day and useable on the road.

Whatever engine you choose, do your research. Lots of the companies like Omex, Scholar, SBDev and Raceline will sell you a brand new turnkey engine at a good price and at any level of tune you like, these could save you some headaches later. Zetecs are now getting cheap for a brand new unit (£700) and second-hand Duratecs are less than £1000 from a good scrappie. You might also need a new fuel tank, pump, filter and pipes depending on what is already on your car. At the end of the day the amount of money you have will be the biggest influence in the route you take. Get a hold of the Burton catalogue as that was my bible in the early part of the build, it has lots of valuable info on all things Ford. Also be careful of the names on ford engines, The Focus ST170 engine is actually a Zetec even though it has Duratec written on the cam cover, the 1.7 from the Puma is know as both a Duratec an Zetec but its made by Yamaha and shares nothing with the others and just because a Ford has Zetec written on the boot doesn’t mean it has a Zetec under the bonnet.
