Guys

ALL Ultima Guru's i am not convinced nor willing to accept that with all the technology and abilities we have, that Ultima sell a centre change shift that throws the driver off centre position.

This issue is bugging me so much im considering stopping my build.
I only want a centre change and i am not prepared to sit off centre.

I need advice, answers, help etc.
Ultima Build is in the balance here guys, all sensible responses appreciated.

Cheers
Mark

In limitless land Dom maybe!

Mark, have had the same, unresolved question myself.
The only sensible/comfortable conclusion I have come to is to position the seat with the squab as close to the side/rear panels (or carpet) as poss and then turn it to point slightly toward the centre of the car aligning your feet better with the pedals. Looked a bit odd at first but it seems to be the only reasonable ergonomic solution!
It appears common that the 'shoulder ears' on the seats sit normally outside of the rear rollbar outer face....the body/doors do not land immediately next to the roll bar in this area!

Otherwise Im considering modding the seats to include a recess/cutout area around the centre change as your leg/knee is normally rising away from the base at that point anyway!

This is what youll be doing anyway.. pedals are biased to the middle of the car, so there is no other way round it? - tho you could move the handbrake to get the seat more central?

side note - I really dont see what is wrong with a right hand gear change??? You guys drive on the continent don't you? - do you have trouble when you hire a car? Cant say I even give it a second thought? (My Ult is not on the road tho.. so cant speak for ultima experience)

Yes tiptonic would be a nice option, but costs will be an issue.
Is it me or is this not a stupid F***ing issue to be dealing with. The really annoying thing is that this is never mentioned prior to the purchase of any parts. In fact, ive built all of the rolling chassis and the bodywork etc, and only because i have sat ina car with centre change have i noticed the issue.
Im getting fed up with hitting a brick wall at every stage of this build.
Im realiably informed that the hubs / suspension setup etc is still only designed to accept a 15" wheel, not the 18" wheels we are all supplied.
I have yet to hear an answer from Ultima for this seating position, which i find unacceptable.
This isnt a 20 grand kitcar why am i hitting so many stoppers.
Please tell me im not the only one here with these feelings.

Im guessing this is the first car you've built? Compared to the others I have built, its an absolute piece of P*ss. - I would say however that I wish there was a definative 'options' list for the car, as most people seem to find out about alternative parts ect by word of mouth..

Dont get irate.. just slow down and stick with it.. everything is adaptable, it just takes time. Youll be pleased in the end.

Maybe the factory will answer that sidechange is their preferred standard, with centre being a builder option.

An accumulation of build difficulties/complications throughout a 50K project can 'grind ones gears' a bit.

(sorry Mark no pun intended, I really do understand exactly what you mean)

Think you may be.
The seat is angled slightly into the centre on all cars including the one you sat in prior to placing an order. You didn't notice it then for the simple reason that it does not matter and in no way causes a problem.

Steve your right i didnt notice it when i first sat in the vehicle. Not that you get given the chance to sit in a centre change nor do you get given the chance to drive ONE.

However i had more things going through my mind, as with all things throughout the build i thought about them as i got them.
Your comment "You didn't notice it then for the simple reason that it does not matter and in no way causes a problem" - is completely irrelevent.

The point is there is an issue. Regardless of cost and the fact that this is a self build, there is an issue, and simply there should not be. Its not a new company yet behind the scenes the true issues come out, many wont state on here, but the emails are sent and the discussions take place.

Steve, Its clear that you have your views but im not willing to settle for imperfections, this maybe acceptable to you, but if you were one of my client i would be expecting your call, and i would be fast finding a solution to your issue.

For all of you die hard fans, i am by no means slating the Ultima, i love them myself hence the financial commtiment. Im simply raising issues that "I" feel should be addressed.

So onwards and upwards, how do we solve the issue.

Hang in there mate, once you get to do this (and beat just about everything else around a track) you'll be laughing and well chuffed:

Nah, I got passed by two caterhams (on race rubber), a v8 Westfield that had 100K spent on it!, a standard looking Subaru WRX!! and a couple of pukka race cars. Everything else was fair game including a yellow 997 GT3...

Reckon the centre shift looks pretty good and I'm surprised it makes the seat offcentre. Why don't you just shift the whole lot (both seats and centre shift) slightly to the left and therefore squeeze the passenger a little in return for more comfort for you??

Dunno really but why don't you sit in a few cars before you make your mind up? Plenty of owners on here so just find out where all the centreshift guys are located...

Hi Mark

Come and drive my car yourself!!! It takes 2 mins to get used to but after a short run you wont be worried about it i promise you.

As Dave says the seat can be angled to help the situation, i would go with a right hand shifter on cables if i had my time again. There are other solutions.

I actually prefer a right hand change, especially if it's sequential for some strange reason!

the centrshift guys all have the same issues but as Rob has said there are ways round it, dont lose the faith mate you will love the car when it is finished. Come and sit in the cars again and have a good think about it while you sit there??

the cars have many issues much like many others but once you get behind the wheel you will soon forget them.

Hi Mark

I wouldn't get to hung up on the centre change! Like I said the other night it's not something you notice once your out enjoying the car! But I do have some good news! We have a prototype cable changer in the pipeline that will be much narrower than the standard porsche unit. This will allow the seats to be closer together therefore reducing the offset if not completely getting rid of it.

Regards Dave

how about handbrake on the right of the drivers seat and centre shift forward of the seats but with a longer dogleg lever...???Seat would be almost touching and you would be central to the pedals

How big is your waist? The factory seats are wide and you shouldn't have any trouble finding a thinner seat.

Also, the option to put the shifter closer to the passenger side exists.

After sitting in both a cable shifted car and one with a solid linkage the extra 20 mm offset was a non-issue.

Remember to put the seat in and mark out the hole positions before you drill any holes whichever option you go for .
